Zavoré works as decorative specialists in Essex, installing the whole range of crafted wall and ceiling finishes for homeowners, designers, architects and contractors. That means Venetian plaster, polished plaster, marmorino, limewash, tadelakt, microcement, clay plaster, concrete effect and liquid metal, alongside bas relief, murals, mosaics, cornice and coving, gilding and lacquered walls. Larger jobs are planned in blocks of days, with the team staying on site and working through each craft in order.
Essex has a long tradition of decorative plasterwork. Pargetting, moulded and incised plaster on the fronts of old timber framed buildings, is part of the look of north Essex towns such as Saffron Walden. That heritage is a reminder that a plastered surface in this county has always been a place for craft. Our work is indoors, and it draws on the same love of modelled and finished plaster.
The county breaks into three kinds of building. The first is old, the timber framed villages, Georgian streets in Colchester and Maldon and Victorian villas, with lime walls and ornate ceilings. The second is the coast, the seafront hotels, bars and flats of Southend, Clacton and Frinton, and the large country house and barn venues inland. The third is new, the extensions, loft conversions, estates and apartments of the larger towns, with flat plasterboard and open plan living. Each wants different crafts.
A few honest points. Venetian plaster is not for the inside of a shower, and tadelakt or microcement on a properly prepared, waterproofed wall is. Polished finishes show every dip, so the wall must be flat. Lime breathes and suits solid old walls, while acrylic forms a film. Plasterboard needs reinforced joints and the right primer, and damp is fixed before any finish goes on.
Many Essex projects involve more than one party, a designer for a barn conversion, an architect for a seafront flat or a contractor fitting out a restaurant. We survey first, on site or from photographs, checking what the walls are made of, flatness, damp, movement, access and protection. For plaster we agree the finish and colour on a sample board, in our 48 house colours or any NCS reference, and the material is tinted to the approved sample before it leaves Birmingham. For murals, relief and mosaics we work from a scaled drawing that you approve. Heated rooms matter, because cold damp rooms slow drying. Dates are agreed once the sample and price are signed off.
If your own decorator will lay the finish, the shop sells plasters, primers, waxes and tools with tracked delivery to Essex. Some crafts, such as a mural or a gilded ceiling, are better left to specialists, and we will say so.
