On site, a specified finish is sometimes swapped for something that looks similar in a photograph. These are the three questions worth asking before you agree.
Real Venetian plaster is lime. It cures by drawing carbon dioxide from the air and hardens back towards stone. Many products sold under the same name are an acrylic binder with marble dust, which forms a plastic film on the wall. The depth, the feel under the hand and the way it ages are different.
Lime lets moisture vapour pass through the wall. An acrylic film holds it in. On older solid walls and period properties that difference matters long after the decorators have gone.
A lime finish can be patched and blended back into the wall by someone who knows it. An acrylic finish is much harder to repair without the patch showing, and often means redoing the whole wall.
