Plenty of suppliers sell acrylic finishes under a venetian name and hope nobody asks. We stock both lime and acrylic ranges at Zavoré, on purpose, so we have no reason to flatter either one. Here is the difference in plain terms.
The classic venetian finishes are slaked lime and marble dust. Lime breathes, which is why it belongs on period walls and in wet rooms done properly; moisture moves through it instead of blistering behind it. It carbonates as it cures, hardening over months into something genuinely stone-like, and it takes a burnish that acrylic can only imitate. It asks more of the applicator in return: lime rewards patience and punishes haste.
Modern acrylic decorative finishes are consistent, forgiving and quick. They bond happily to modern substrates, shrug off knocks in busy corridors, and hold strong colour with ease. Metallics and many contemporary effects are acrylic by nature. On a commercial programme where three rooms must look identical and the deadline is real, acrylic is often the honest recommendation.
Ask three questions. Does the wall need to breathe? Lime. Will the surface take daily punishment? Acrylic earns its keep. Is the goal the deep, cool, polished-stone look that made Venice famous? That is lime, worked well. Neither material is the budget option of the other; they are different tools.
Every product in our shop states its base openly, and every tub is machine tinted to your exact colour in either system. If you are unsure which your project needs, call 07592 929191 and describe the room; our specialists install both materials for clients and will point you at the right one, not the dearest one. And if you want to master the difference by hand, that is exactly what we teach at the Training Academy.
