Seamless floors, walls and bathrooms with no grout lines, laid by our own applicators who travel from Birmingham.
Microcement in Essex is mostly wanted in two places, the bathroom and the extension that opens a house up, where a surface with no grout lines and no thresholds changes how a room feels. Zavoré is based in Birmingham, and our own applicators travel to Essex to trowel it by hand. We survey the base first, agree colour and sheen on a sample board, and tint before anything leaves Birmingham.
Essex has a great deal of ordinary, much loved housing, and most of it has been altered. Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Chelmsford, Colchester and Southend on Sea have been extended at the back. Interwar semis fill the suburbs of Leigh on Sea, Westcliff, Loughton and many other towns. Along the coast at Southend, Clacton and Frinton there are blocks of flats, and across the larger towns there is new apartment building.
Each of those has a different base under the finish. Older houses usually have suspended timber floors that must be stiffened and boarded before anything rigid goes down. A new extension or flat will have a screed that has to be dry all the way through, not just on top. Dry lined flat walls need their joints reinforced and the right primer. We check which you have at survey, because the base decides how microcement performs.
Microcement is cement, fine aggregate, polymer and pigment trowelled in thin layers over a primed and reinforced base. Our microcement finishes page covers the material, and these are the places it suits most often in Essex.
The sealer on top is what makes microcement waterproof and washable, not the cement itself. In a shower the tanking behind it must still be done properly, exactly as it would be under tile. Existing tiles can often stay as a base if they are firmly stuck, degreased and keyed, with drummy ones lifted and grout lines filled. Microcement is not a way round proper waterproofing.
It also carries gentle cloudy movement, because it is laid by hand. Matt looks most natural but shows water marks more readily on a floor. If you want one dead flat uniform grey, a sheet product is the honest answer.
We start with a survey, helped by photos where possible, looking at the base, flatness, cracks, movement, damp and access. A sample board follows, usually in a grey, greige, warm stone or off black. Essex is a good way from our Birmingham base, so work is planned in blocks of days, with the team staying on the job and laying each stage in order. Dates are agreed once sample and price are signed off, and the full detail is on our microcement installation page.
Zavoré installs microcement. For people who want to buy materials, we supply lime built finishes that give the same seamless look. Pastellone is a lime and marble finish for floors and walls, and beton stucco is a concrete look wall finish, both tinted to your colour and sent by tracked delivery. Browse the shop, or ask about a trade account if you buy regularly.
If a seamless surface is not quite right for a room, compare tadelakt in Essex for a lime shower, concrete effect plaster in Essex for walls, and polished plaster in Essex, marmorino in Essex, limewash in Essex and clay plaster in Essex for living spaces. There is also liquid metal in Essex, the wider range under decorative specialists in Essex, and the classic lime craft in Venetian plastering in Essex.
Often, yes, if they are firmly stuck, degreased and keyed. Drummy tiles are lifted and made good, and grout lines are filled and reinforced so they do not shadow through later. If tiles are loose or the floor moves, they come up first.
Yes, that is one of the strongest uses, because a single floor from kitchen to garden room has no threshold to break the line. The new screed must be fully dry, and any movement joint in the structure has to be carried through the finish.
It can be. A seamless surface has no grout to clean, but the tanking and sealer still do the waterproofing. Flats often have boarded walls, which need reinforced joints and the right primer before the finish goes on.
It can if the floor flexes. A springy timber floor will crack any rigid surface however good the material. We stiffen and board it first, or tell you plainly if another finish would suit the room better.
