Polished Plaster in Essex

Burnished lime and marble on tall, flat walls, laid by our own applicators who travel from Birmingham.

Polished plaster in Essex comes into its own on tall, flat, formal walls, the hall of a Georgian town house, the dining room of a Victorian villa or the wide entrance of a large modern family home. Zavoré is based in Birmingham, and our own applicators travel to Essex to lay it by hand. We survey the walls first, then agree the colour on a sample board.

Polished plaster, or stucco veneziano, is slaked lime and finely ground marble laid in thin coats and burnished with a steel trowel until it reflects. There is no grit to feel. What you see is depth, several near transparent layers with a little of each one showing through the next.

Georgian streets, Victorian villas and big family houses

Essex is a long, varied county, and its housing runs from medieval villages to estuary seafronts. In older towns such as Colchester, Maldon and Harwich there are Georgian houses with tall rooms and plain flat walls, exactly what a burnished finish likes. Victorian and Edwardian villas around Chelmsford, Southend on Sea and Westcliff have generous halls and front rooms with high ceilings. In the commuter belt on the edge of London, places like Brentwood, Loughton and Chigwell have large detached family houses whose wide hallways want to feel finished the moment the front door opens.

Flatness is the deciding question. A polished surface reflects, so it shows every hollow and every patched chase. Plasterboard walls in newer houses are usually a good base once the joints are reinforced and the right primer is on. Old walls carrying decades of repairs may need skimming first, and we say so at the survey rather than after the quote.

North Essex is a different story. Its villages are full of medieval timber framed houses, with walls that move and never run true. Polished plaster is the wrong finish there. marmorino in Essex or limewash in Essex sit far more kindly on a wall like that, and we would rather steer you towards them than sell you a mirror finish that cracks.

Where polished plaster works in an Essex home

Our polished plaster finishes page explains the material in full. In an Essex house the places it earns its keep are usually these.

  • Entrance halls and staircases, where a long unbroken wall shows the depth to full effect.
  • Dining rooms and formal reception rooms.
  • The wall behind a bed or a fireplace.
  • Cloakrooms and powder rooms, waxed so they shrug off splashes.
  • Hotel lobbies, restaurants and reception desks.

Wax gives useful water resistance, which is why polished plaster sits well on a cloakroom or bathroom wall. It is not for the inside of a shower or steam room, where tadelakt belongs, and it should stay away from the wall directly behind a hob. A wall that flexes, such as a timber stud partition that has not been braced, is also better left to a softer lime finish.

How a polished plaster job in Essex runs

First a survey, helped by photographs if you like. We look at flatness, cracks, movement, damp, access and how the room is used. Then the sample board settles colour and sheen, because deep colours show the movement most and very pale ones read closer to a smooth painted wall with a shine on it. The plaster is tinted to the approved sample before it leaves Birmingham, in our 48 house colours or any NCS reference.

Most of Essex is a fair way from our Birmingham base, so larger jobs are planned in blocks of days. The team stays on site and lays each coat in order, then burnishes and waxes, and dates are agreed once the sample and price are signed off. The detail is on our Venetian plaster installation page.

Buying the material, or learning the craft

Polished plaster is honestly the hardest finish we sell. The burnish has a short window on any patch, and miss it and the wall stays dull. If you want your decorator to lay it, the shop sells veneziano plaster tinted to your colour, primer and natural bees wax with tracked delivery. Regular buyers can ask about a trade account, and Venetian plaster courses run in Birmingham on our training page. If it is your own hallway and you only get one go, let us do it.

More finishes in Essex

Polished plaster is one choice among many. For a calmer, forgiving lime wall see marmorino and clay plaster, and for bathrooms compare tadelakt in Essex and microcement in Essex. Older walls may suit limewash in Essex, modern rooms concrete effect plaster in Essex, and a single glowing wall liquid metal in Essex. The whole range is covered in decorative specialists in Essex, and the classic lime craft in Venetian plastering in Essex.

Questions about polished plaster in Essex

Is polished plaster right for a Georgian house in Essex?

Very often, yes. Georgian rooms are tall and plain with flat walls, which suits a burnished finish. The condition of the old plaster decides it, so we survey first and tell you whether it needs skimming or making good before the lime goes on.

Can polished plaster go on the walls of a timber framed Essex cottage?

We would not usually advise it. Timber framed walls move and are rarely flat, and a hard reflective skin shows both problems. Marmorino or limewash is the better answer, because lime of that kind moves with the building and lets it breathe.

Will polished plaster work on the plasterboard walls of a newer house?

Yes, it is often the easiest base, provided the joints are reinforced and the correct primer goes on first. Newer boarded walls are usually flat, which is exactly what a polished finish needs.

Do you travel to Essex for polished plaster?

Yes. Our own applicators travel from Birmingham to install across the UK. Because Essex is some distance away, the work is planned in blocks of days so the team stays on site.
