Clay Plaster in Essex

The roman clay look in fine Italian lime, laid by our own applicators who travel from Birmingham.

Clay plaster in Essex is the soft, matt, faintly mottled wall that turns a blank new build or a tired bedroom into somewhere calm. Zavoré is based in Birmingham, and our own applicators travel to Essex to lay it by hand. We do not sell clay itself. We supply fine Italian lime plasters that give the same roman clay look and live better in a British house, and a sample board is the place to begin.

Blank new estates and crooked old cottages

Essex is one of the fastest growing counties for new homes. Large estates have been added on the edges of towns such as Chelmsford, Colchester and Harlow, and the Thames side has plenty of newer flats. Those homes tend to have flat white walls on plasterboard that read as lifeless, and owners looking for warmth often find a matt mineral finish does it.

At the other end of the county, old cottages and farmhouses have walls that will never be flat, and Victorian terraces have chimney breasts and alcoves that suit a quiet colour. A soft lime plaster forgives an uneven surface in a way a polished one never will. It also stays breathable, which matters on old solid walls.

Plasterboard needs its joints reinforced and the right primer before any lime goes on, and we cover that at survey. Because the finish is matt, there is no shine to distract the eye, so the preparation shows if it is poor.

Roman clay, honestly, and what we send

Roman clay is an American trade name for a family of products. In Italy the same finish is made with lime, and it hardens as it carbonates, where unstabilised clay stays water soluble. Our clay plaster finishes page explains the choices. In short there are three.

  • Intonachino, a fine lime with a light grain, the closest to most roman clay photographs.
  • Stucco suede, smoother and softer, with a long quiet mottle that suits a bedroom.
  • Lime paint, for a chalky colour washed wall with brush movement and less work.

Colour goes through the plaster, so you see two or three shades at once depending on where you stand and where the lamp is. Earth colours, bone, clay pink, olive and warm stone do the most with it. We tint from NCS, RAL or fan deck references, and the colour is tinted before it leaves Birmingham.

Where clay plaster works in an Essex home

  • Bedrooms and quiet sitting rooms.
  • Chimney breasts and alcoves in terraces and cottages.
  • Hallways and landings, with the lower wall sealed if there are dogs and pushchairs.
  • New build rooms that feel flat and cold.
  • Boutique hotel rooms and restaurants.

Keep it away from showers, bath splashbacks and the wall directly behind a hob, where grease finds the texture and stays. Those are jobs for tadelakt or another closed surface. A matt mineral wall is not wipe clean vinyl, though it takes a knock better than people expect and can be patched.

How a clay plaster job in Essex runs

We survey first, from photos where possible, checking the wall, any damp, movement and access. Then you live with a sample board for a week, in the room, before ordering the room. On site, the plaster goes over primer in two thin coats with a stainless trowel, the second worked while still open so each pass blends into the last. Because Essex is some distance from our base, the work is planned in blocks of days, and details are on our clay plaster installation page.

Buying for your own decorator

Clay plaster is the friendliest of our finishes to lay yourself, because there is no burnish to get wrong. The shop sells intonachino, stucco suede, lime paint and primer with tracked delivery, and a trade account is available. What catches people out is scale and edges, holding the mottle across a big wall and cutting a clean line at the ceiling.

Questions about clay plaster in Essex

Do you sell real clay plaster for Essex homes?

No. We supply Italian lime plasters, intonachino and stucco suede, because they give the same look and live better in a British house. Lime hardens as it carbonates and can be patched, while unstabilised clay softens with water.

Can clay plaster go on the plasterboard walls of a new build?

Yes, provided the joints are reinforced and the right primer goes on first. A matt finish shows poor preparation, so the work happens before the first coat.

Is the roman clay look practical in a family hallway?

With care. A matt mineral wall takes a knock better than emulsion and can be patched, but greasy marks are awkward. We would seal the lower part of the wall and tell you beforehand that the sheen will differ there.

Which suits an Essex bedroom, intonachino or stucco suede?

Stucco suede is finer, with a longer quiet mottle that keeps a bedroom restful. Intonachino has a light grain that catches the light like stone dust. A sample board of each settles it.
