Concrete Effect Plaster in Essex

Mineral plaster trowelled to a soft grey cloud, laid by our own applicators who travel from Birmingham.

Concrete effect plaster in Essex suits the modern side of the county, the open plan kitchen diner, the converted barn with new inner walls, the loft conversion with flat square walls. Zavoré is based in Birmingham, and our own applicators travel to Essex to trowel it by hand. We use Beton Stucco, a mineral plaster tinted to your colour, not a textured paint rolled from a tin.

Extensions, barns, new towns and new flats

Essex homeowners extend and convert more than most. Interwar semis and Victorian terraces gain rear kitchen extensions, lofts are boarded and plastered, and farm barns across the county become houses with a clean modern interior set inside old brick and oak. Concrete effect works in that setting because it is cool, quiet and mineral, and it stands against exposed timber and brick without competing.

The county also has a strong modern streak in its buildings. Harlow and Basildon were planned as post war new towns with a modern, concrete heavy town centre, and newer apartments have appeared along the Thames estuary and in the larger towns. A cloudy grey wall feels at home with that architecture.

It is not for everything. In period rooms full of cornice, picture rail and panelled doors, concrete fights the detail rather than sitting alongside it, and a Georgian or Victorian house in the older towns would be better served by polished plaster in Essex or limewash in Essex.

Where concrete effect works in an Essex home

Our concrete effect finishes page covers the material in detail. These are the sensible places for it.

  • Open plan kitchen and dining walls in an extension.
  • A feature wall behind a hob or a bath, sealed and waterproofed.
  • Hallways and stairwells in newer houses.
  • Loft conversions with flat, square walls.
  • Gallery spaces, studios and shopfronts.

Unsealed, the finish is porous and will take a mark from oil or wine. In a kitchen we seal it, which makes it wipeable and warms the colour slightly, and behind a sink or hob we add waterproofer first. A shower enclosure is a different job, because running water calls for tadelakt. Steam and splash in a bathroom are fine.

The wall decides how it looks

A concrete finish is thin, so the wall shows through it. Hollows, roller stipple from old emulsion and tape lines over plasterboard joints all come up through the coats. Corners matter more than faces, because a wavy arris is obvious in low light. New boarded extension walls are usually a good base once the joints are reinforced and primed. Old Essex walls often need making good first, and we would rather do that properly than lay good material over a bad surface. It will not suit damp walls until the damp is cured at its source.

Grey is not one colour

Concrete covers everything from a warm putty to a cold blue grey. A north facing room pulls grey toward blue, and a south facing one warms it and softens the cloud. We tint to an NCS or RAL reference before the tub leaves Birmingham, so a second order matches. Order a sample board and look at it on the wall late in the afternoon.

How a concrete effect job in Essex runs

We survey first, then lay the plaster in thin coats over a primed wall, working the whole wall in one go to keep a wet edge. A long kitchen wall is normally two pairs of hands. Essex is some way from Birmingham, so the work is planned in blocks of days. The detail is on our concrete effect installation page. If you want to lay it yourself, the shop sells Beton Stucco, primer and sealer, and there is a trade account for regular buyers. A small alcove is a fair first job, a long open plan wall is not.

Other modern options are microcement in Essex for seamless floors and bathrooms and liquid metal in Essex for one glowing wall. For softer, warmer rooms see clay plaster in Essex, marmorino in Essex and tadelakt in Essex. The whole range sits under decorative specialists in Essex, and the lime tradition under Venetian plastering in Essex.

Questions about concrete effect plaster in Essex

Does concrete effect plaster suit a 1930s Essex semi?

In a rear kitchen extension, often yes. In front rooms with picture rails and panelled doors it fights the period detail, and a lime finish such as marmorino is usually kinder.

Can concrete effect go behind the hob in a kitchen extension?

Yes, if it is sealed, and we add waterproofer behind a hob or sink before the sealer. The sealer makes it wipeable and slightly deepens the colour, so we show it on a sample board first.

Does concrete effect plaster work in a converted Essex barn?

It suits the new inner walls of a conversion, where flat plasterboard sits beside old brick and timber. The boarded joints are reinforced and primed first, and the exposed original fabric is left alone.

Is concrete effect paint the same thing?

No. Concrete effect paint is an acrylic with texture in it, rolled and stippled. Beton Stucco is a mineral plaster trowelled in thin coats, so the tone and cloud sit inside the material and read as concrete from a foot away.
