Lime Venetian plaster, Marmorino and limewash, tinted to your colour in Birmingham and laid on York walls by our own applicators.
Zavoré provides Venetian plastering in York for period houses, city flats and commercial interiors. We are based in Birmingham, our own applicators travel to York to lay every finish, and the plaster is tinted to your approved sample before it leaves us. To begin, order a sample board or email a few photos of the walls, with the postcode, to sales@zavore.co.uk.
York is a long way north of our Birmingham base, so we plan the work in blocks of days. The team stays on the job and lays each coat in order rather than travelling back and forth.
York is a walled city, and the centre is a conservation area. Inside the walls you find narrow medieval streets such as the Shambles, where timber framed buildings lean over the lane, alongside Georgian townhouses with tall rooms and sash windows. Many of the grander houses sit around Bootham, Micklegate and Fishergate, close to the Minster and the river.
Beyond the walls, the Victorian city grew up around the railway. Holgate and the Groves are streets of brick terraces, and the suburbs of Acomb and Fulford add interwar and postwar semis, with newer estates on the outskirts. Along the Ouse and the Foss there are riverside flats, and the university campus at Heslington brings a steady market in student lets.
These are very different walls. A Georgian or medieval wall is likely to be solid and slightly uneven, and it wants a finish that lets moisture out. A Victorian terrace has often been patched many times. A new build flat has plasterboard and needs its joints reinforced first. York is also known for river flooding, so if a ground floor has ever been wet, we want to know, and the wall must be fully dry before any decorative coat goes on.
Bathrooms need something else. Venetian plaster is not what we recommend inside a shower, so we would use tadelakt or microcement on a wall that has been properly waterproofed.
We start from your photos, then survey the walls. We look at the substrate, how flat and sound it is, any cracks, damp or movement, how the room is used, and access and protection. If a wall needs skimming, stripping or a damp problem fixing first, we tell you plainly.
Once the sample and the price are signed off, we agree dates. Because York is far from Birmingham, the team is booked in a block, and the plaster arrives already tinted to the approved sample. Venetian plaster has 48 house colours, or any NCS reference. Coats are thin and need drying time between them, so it helps if electrics, joinery and any skimming are finished beforehand, and if a cold, damp room can be warmed gently.
Inside the walls, narrow streets and limited parking are a fact of life, so tell us early about permits, loading and access to upper floors. Our Venetian plaster installation page lists everything we lay, and you can see every area we cover.
If you already have a decorator in York, we can supply the plaster, base coats and wax tinted to your colour and send them tracked to your door. Decorators and plasterers wanting to learn the craft can book one of our Venetian plaster courses in Birmingham.
Further reading on older walls is in our guide to lime or acrylic Venetian plaster, and our piece on Victorian, Georgian and Edwardian coving will help if you are restoring mouldings.
Yes. Our own applicators travel from Birmingham and the work is planned in blocks of days, so the same team stays and lays each coat in order. Dates are agreed once the sample and price are signed off.
A breathable lime finish such as Marmorino or limewash suits solid old walls and period proportions. Acrylic look alikes form a film that can trap moisture.
Only once the wall is completely dry and any damp problem has been fixed. We check this at survey and say plainly if the wall is not ready.
Yes. We tint it to your colour and send it tracked, together with the base coats and wax your decorator needs.
