Ripon is a small cathedral city with a lot of old fabric, and a good deal of the work here involves walls that are many generations older than the paint on them.
The cathedral dominates the city, and its crypt is among the oldest parts of any church in England. Around it, the medieval street plan survives. The Market Place is a broad square, with a tall obelisk at its centre and Georgian and earlier buildings around its edges, and each evening the Hornblower still sounds a horn in a tradition that goes back centuries. On the Market Place, Wakeman’s House is a medieval timber framed building, and the city has a quiet scattering of Georgian townhouses and Victorian terraces in the streets that lead away from the square.
Outside the centre, newer housing follows a familiar pattern, with interwar and postwar semis and more recent estates around the edges. Beyond that is farming country. The villages of the Dales fringe have stone cottages and farmhouses, many with the thick walls and small windows typical of older rural buildings, and the countryside around Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal is farming and estate land.
Old buildings of this kind often have lime plaster behind later layers of paint and wallpaper, and cement repairs that have caused damp. Newer houses in the same streets have plasterboard walls that behave quite differently.
We start with photos and rough measurements. Then comes the survey, in which we examine the substrate, how flat the walls are, any cracks, damp or movement, and the way the room is used. In an old building we are especially careful about damp and previous repairs, and we say honestly if anything needs sorting before decorative plaster goes on.
Ripon is a long way from Birmingham, so larger jobs are planned in blocks of days. The team stays nearby, lays each coat in order and avoids repeated journeys. Dates are agreed once you have approved the sample and the price, and the plaster is tinted to the sample before it leaves Birmingham.
Rural properties can have long tracks or limited turning space, and cathedral city streets can be tight, so tell us about access. A cold, damp room slows drying, and gentle heat helps. Damp is something we look at before pricing. If a wall has a damp problem, it should be fixed first, because a decorative finish will not solve it.
