Ripon is a small cathedral city, and anyone there who wants Venetian plastering training will find it at the Zavoré Academy in Birmingham. People from Ripon and the surrounding parts of North Yorkshire go to Birmingham for the course, then use what they learn at home.
If you are a painter and decorator working in country houses, a builder who restores old properties, a plasterer interested in lime, an interior designer, or a homeowner planning a careful renovation, the training is built to be useful to you.
Ripon and its surroundings are full of old buildings, and old buildings reward people who understand traditional plasters.
The cathedral and the market place with its obelisk give the city a historic centre, with Georgian and Victorian townhouses and shops around the square. Behind them are stone cottages and terraces. These walls were built to breathe, so lime based finishes such as Marmorino respect how they work, where modern sealed coatings can trap moisture and cause trouble.
The countryside around the city holds farmhouses, converted barns and village houses, plus grander country houses, and the area is close to Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, a World Heritage Site that draws visitors. The edge of the Yorkshire Dales and Nidderdale is not far off, and rural homes of this kind often call for sensitive restoration.
Hospitality matters here too. The region's inns, guest houses, tea rooms and hotels serve visitors, and Ripon has a racecourse that adds to the trade. A skilled applicator can offer these owners a feature wall for a bar, a restaurant room or a bridal suite.
The nearby town of Harrogate has Victorian spa town houses and hotels, so a decorator in Ripon can look for work among two sets of buildings with quite different characters.
A first timer should take the Beginner Course, an experienced person can go to the Advanced Course, and anyone with a particular goal can ask for 1 to 1 Training.
On the Beginner Course you learn the theory of how a Venetian plaster wall is built, practise surface preparation and base coats, and finish with Marmorino, polished plaster and metallics. The Advanced Course adds depth, including textured Marmorino, tinting and blending colours and waxes. Choose 1 to 1 Training if you would like to concentrate on one design.
Group courses have up to six students. Dates, or a way to register interest, are on the training page. Pay half to hold a bench and the rest on the day, or pay everything when you book online.
You will go to Birmingham by train or by car, and since it is a central city, it is a fair meeting point for students from different regions.
Remember that the course takes 3 or 4 days, so you will need a room. Zavoré can offer a partner rate at a hotel near the Academy if you mention Zavoré at booking. Pickup from an airport or station can be arranged too, priced according to where you arrive. Each day starts at 10am and finishes at 5pm, and lunch and refreshments are provided.
Afterwards you hold a set of finished panels, a Zavoré certificate and trade pricing for Zavoré materials. You also join the private course group, where the helpline stays open for life. Those who complete the Advanced Course receive help to find, price and win their first paid decorative job.
To see how Zavoré approaches finished walls, read about Venetian plastering in Ripon. For more on traditional materials, the guide to lime plaster and Venetian plaster explains how they relate.
No, the courses are held at the Zavoré Academy in Birmingham. People from Ripon travel there for the 3 or 4 days of their chosen course.
It teaches how plasters behave and how a wall is built layer by layer, and lime based Marmorino is part of the Beginner Course. That gives you a sound basis for judging what suits an older wall.
Yes. You do not need a team behind you. Group courses have up to six students, and 1 to 1 Training is available if you want individual attention.
You join a private course group with a helpline for life, so you can ask questions when you meet a difficult wall.
