Limewash Paint Feature Walls in Modern Homes

Limewash paint feature walls in modern homes, a textured plaster wall behind a console table

Short answer. A limewash paint feature wall adds soft movement and texture to a plain modern room without the cost of a full plaster finish. It works on plasterboard and modern skim once the wall is properly prepared and, if the product asks for it, primed. Pick one wall with a clear role in the room, choose an earthy colour, and plan the edges before you start.

Why limewash works in modern rooms

Many new homes have flat, even walls painted in one shade of white. Limewash paint breaks that up. Brush marks and small changes in tone give a soft, cloudy surface that looks hand made. It sits well with wood, linen, stone, plain furniture and plants.

It is also simpler than a polished plaster wall. There is no trowelling or burnishing, so a careful homeowner can do it, and a decorator can finish it in far less time.

In a flat or new build with low ceilings, a limewash wall can also make a room feel calmer, because the soft texture draws the eye without the hard contrast of a bold flat paint colour. It works in bedrooms, living rooms and hallways, and it is easy to refresh if you change your mind about the shade later.

Choosing the right wall

A feature wall should have a reason to stand out. Good choices include the following.

  • the wall behind a bed or sofa;
  • a chimney breast or alcove;
  • the end wall of a hallway that you see as you walk in;
  • a dining wall behind a table.

Avoid walls broken up by many doors, sockets and radiators. The effect is clearest on a large, plain surface. Our feature wall ideas guide has more on placement.

Preparing modern walls

Most modern walls are plasterboard with a modern skim, often already painted in emulsion. Lime products can struggle to grip on smooth, sealed surfaces. Before you start.

  • fill cracks and sand back any rough patches;
  • clean off dust and grease;
  • check whether your limewash paint needs a specific primer on painted or modern plaster walls;
  • test a small patch and let it dry fully.

Protect the floor, skirting and nearby walls with dust sheets and masking before you open the tin. Lime splashes are easy to wipe while wet but harder to shift once dry, and fresh lime can mark glass and stone. Wear gloves and eye protection, because lime products are alkaline and can irritate skin and eyes.

Colour and edges

Limewash looks richest in earthy, mid tone colours such as clay, sand, stone, sage and warm grey. Very pale colours give a gentle effect, while deeper tones show more movement. The colour dries much paler than it looks wet, so judge it only when fully dry.

Edges matter on a feature wall. Decide where the colour will stop. A clean internal corner is easiest. On a flat wall, a straight line along a timber bead or a painted skirting looks neater than a freehand edge. For a textured wall with more depth, Marmorino or clay plaster are worth looking at too.

Questions we get asked

Can limewash paint go over emulsion?

Some products can with the right primer and some cannot. Check the instructions for your product and test a patch first.

How many coats does a feature wall need?

Most limewash paints need at least two coats, while true limewash needs more. Follow the product guidance.

Will a limewash feature wall look the same all over?

No, and that is the point. Expect gentle changes in tone across the wall.
