Scarborough is a long way from Birmingham, so we plan the work in blocks of days and the team stays until the last coat is on.
Scarborough grew into a grand Victorian seaside resort, and the town still looks like one. The South Cliff is lined with tall Victorian and Edwardian villas and terraces, many of them built as hotels and boarding houses, and the Crescent has Georgian terraces overlooking the valley. The Grand Hotel is the most famous of the big Victorian buildings on the front.
Down by the harbour, the Old Town runs up the headland towards the castle in narrow lanes of small, older cottages. Behind the seafront, the north and south bays are backed by Victorian and interwar streets, with newer estates on higher ground at the edges of town.
That mix gives us a few clear jobs. Large old guest houses have been converted into flats and holiday lets, with high ceilings and long stairwells. Small cottages in the Old Town have thick walls and low ceilings. Sea air and driving weather mean exposed walls can stay damp, so a damp problem must be understood before any finish is applied.
For a holiday let, a finish that cleans and repairs easily is worth discussing before you choose the colour.
We begin with photos and then survey the walls. We check the substrate, flatness, cracks, damp and movement, how the room is used, and access and protection. A wall that needs skimming, stripping or a damp repair first will be flagged plainly.
When the sample and price are signed off, we agree dates. The plaster is tinted to the approved sample in Birmingham, and Venetian plaster comes in 48 house colours or any NCS reference. Each coat needs time to dry, and a cold room slows that down, so a holiday let that is empty out of season still needs gentle heat while the work goes on.

Solid Victorian walls do best with a breathable lime finish such as Marmorino or limewash. We survey for damp first, because a coastal wall that stays wet will cause trouble for any finish.
