Chester is a planned journey for us, so the work is arranged in blocks of days. The team stays through the job and builds up each coat in order, instead of coming and going.
Few English cities are as easy to read from the street. The Roman and medieval walls still circle the centre, and inside them the Rows, those two level galleries of shops, run along the four main streets. Many of the black and white timber framed fronts you see are Victorian revivals of the older style, standing next to genuine timber framed buildings and red sandstone churches, with the cathedral in the same warm stone.
Outside the walls the city fans into Victorian and Edwardian suburbs. Queen’s Park sits in a bend of the River Dee, Handbridge faces the city across the water, and Curzon Park, Hoole and Upton have large villas, semis and later family houses. Newer apartments now sit along the river and around the canal.
That mix matters for plastering. Old timber frames and solid sandstone or brick breathe and move, so the finish must too. Rooms in a large Victorian villa often have high ceilings and cornice that deserve care. Modern flats usually have flat plasterboard that suits a polished surface. Many central buildings are listed or in a conservation area, so ask the council whether interior work needs consent before you commit.
First we ask for photos, rough measurements and the postcode. Then we survey, looking at the substrate, flatness, cracks, damp, movement, access and how the room is used. In older Chester buildings that often means checking for damp and past repairs, and we say plainly if something has to be fixed before plastering starts.
After you approve the sample and price, we agree dates. We tint the plaster to your sample before it leaves Birmingham, and the team arrives with everything for the full set of coats. Each coat needs time to dry, so keep the room free of other trades, keep it protected, and let the heating run gently if the weather is cold.

We can advise on the plaster, and lime finishes suit older fabric. Whether consent is needed for the work is a matter for the council's conservation officer, so please check that before you book.
