For Venetian plastering training in Northampton, the place to go is the Zavoré Academy in Birmingham. The courses are not held in Northampton itself, so they are designed for people from Northampton and Northamptonshire who are willing to travel for a few days.
You might be a decorator hoping to charge more for each job, a plasterer who wants a decorative string to your bow, a builder who restores older homes, or someone who simply wants a new skill to practise on your own walls.
Northampton has a distinctive building history, and the county around it is full of stone cottages and villages that call for sympathetic finishes.
The town centre was largely rebuilt after a great fire in 1675, and the large Market Square still sits at its heart. Around the centre, the streets of the Boot and Shoe Quarter recall the town's long shoemaking industry, with Victorian terraces and former factory buildings. Houses with solid brick or stone walls do best with breathable lime based plasters and Marmorino, which let moisture escape.
Beyond the town, Northamptonshire has villages built from warm, golden brown ironstone, together with farmhouses, barn conversions and country houses. Barn conversions in particular often have large open rooms and rough textured walls where a hand applied plaster finish looks right at home.
Northampton has also grown with newer housing estates and town centre apartments. Their flat walls are well suited to polished plaster, and bathrooms in any home can use microcement or tadelakt.
Since the county is largely made up of towns and villages, a decorator can build a name by word of mouth. A single finished fireplace wall or hallway can lead to neighbours asking who did it.
If you have not used Venetian plaster before, choose the Beginner Course. If you have, or you work on site, choose the Advanced Course, and if you want your own plan, choose 1 to 1 Training.
Days run from 10am to 5pm with up to six students in a group. Full details are on the product pages for the Beginner Course, the Advanced Course and 1 to 1 Training, and the training page shows dates or lets you register interest.
To understand how the groups work in practice, our article on group courses and 1 to 1 training compares the two.
Birmingham is central in England, and you can get there from Northampton by train or by car. Since the course lasts three or four days, think about where you will stay.
A partner rate with a hotel near the Academy is available, and all you need to do is quote Zavoré. Airport or station pickup can be arranged with your booking if you would like to be met, with the price depending on where you arrive.
Booking is flexible. A bench can be held with half the course price, and the remainder is payable on the day.
The finished panels you make on the course are yours to take home. Use them as a portfolio the next time you quote.
Trade pricing on Zavoré materials follows the course, and the private group and lifelong helpline give you somewhere to ask questions as you start taking jobs. Advanced students also receive help to find, price and win a first paid decorative job.
