Venetian plastering training for Derby takes place at the Zavoré Academy in Birmingham, since the courses are not held in Derby or anywhere else in Derbyshire. Derby students make the trip for 3 or 4 days, learn the craft hands on, and take it home.
This will appeal to decorators and plasterers, property renovators, designers, people changing direction and homeowners keen to learn something real. Absolute beginners are welcome.
Derby has the kind of mixed building stock that suits a plasterer with more than one finish to offer. It is a city of industry and heritage, and also a gateway to some beautiful countryside.
Friar Gate is known for its Georgian houses, and areas such as Normanton are full of Victorian and Edwardian terraces built as the railway and engineering industries grew. Solid brick walls of this age were made to breathe, so lime based plasters like Marmorino sit well on them. Original fireplaces, cornices and tall ceilings give you good reason to choose a finish with depth and character.
The Derwent Valley is home to historic mill buildings, including the Silk Mill in the city and the mills at Darley Abbey, and old industrial buildings across the area have found new uses as homes and offices. Metallic and polished finishes can complement the brick and iron of these spaces.
North of the city, the county rises towards the Peak District, where stone cottages and farmhouses are typical. Such buildings often need a gentle, breathable finish when they are renovated. In newer city apartments and in bathrooms, polished plaster and tadelakt are good options.
A Derby decorator can use these skills to stand out from competitors who only offer paint, and to reach customers across the county.
Newcomers should take the Beginner Course. The Advanced Course is next, or the right start if you already work on site, and 1 to 1 Training suits any level. You can find dates on the training page and register your interest there.
The course day is 10am to 5pm, with no more than six students. On the Beginner Course you learn how a wall is built up in layers and how to finish it in Marmorino, polished plaster and metallics. The Advanced Course tackles polishing to a high gloss, tinting, coloured waxes and sealers. Choose 1 to 1 Training to focus on one finish, such as artificial rock. To think through the career side, read our piece on starting a decorative plastering career.
Derby students can travel to Birmingham by train or by car. Birmingham is central in England, so the Academy is a natural destination for people from across the Midlands and the North.
Since a course takes 3 or 4 days, work out in advance where you will sleep. Zavoré has a partner rate at a hotel near the Academy, and you should quote Zavoré when you reserve. A pickup from an airport or station can be organised with your booking, with the price depending on where you arrive.
Half the price books your bench, and you settle the rest on the day. Telephone 07592 929191 or email sales@zavore.co.uk, or book online and pay the full amount.
Back home, you have panels you made yourself, a Zavoré certificate and trade pricing on Zavoré materials. They give you something concrete to show when a customer in Derby asks what Venetian plaster really looks like.
A private group and helpline come with the course for life, and Advanced students are helped to find, price and win a first paid decorative job.

The Beginner Course explains how lime based plasters behave and how a wall is built up, which is useful on older buildings. A 1 to 1 course can focus on the finishes you expect to use.
You can hold a bench with half the price and pay the rest on the day, or book online and pay in full.
