If Venetian plastering training in Dundee is what you are after, the answer is a short stay in Birmingham. The Zavoré Academy there teaches every course, and Dundee students join people from all over the UK at the benches.
It is a good fit for a tradesperson who wants to move upmarket, a designer who works with finishes, a homeowner restoring a Victorian villa, or anyone wanting a creative second career.
Dundee likes to be thought of as a city of design. It was named a UNESCO City of Design, and the V&A Dundee on the waterfront has made the Tay a focus for new building, hotels and apartments. That climate suits anyone who offers high quality interior finishes.
The older housing tells a different story. The jute trade built a prosperous Victorian city, and it left tenements and villas, especially in the West End, with stone walls and period detail. Broughty Ferry, on the coast, has a reputation for large Victorian villas. Solid stone walls in houses like these are well served by breathable lime finishes such as Marmorino.
Newer flats on the waterfront and in the centre have smooth, flat walls ideal for polished plaster, and bathrooms can be finished in tadelakt or microcement. Hotels, restaurants and bars connected with the visitor trade add steady interest in finishes that feel crafted.
Dundee also has two universities, which keeps a flow of rented flats and new student buildings. A decorator or plasterer who can offer a distinctive finish can reach private owners, landlords and commercial clients through one skill.
Each day runs from 10am until 5pm at the Academy, and the maximum group is six.
Learn the foundations on the Beginner Course, including how to prepare surfaces and build a finish coat by coat. Take the Advanced Course to work on stencil work, sanding and colour blending. A designer working to a brief can book 1 to 1 Training to test a specific finish.
The training page gives dates and a way to register interest. Our article inside the Advanced Venetian Plastering Course shows what the second step looks like.
Students get to Birmingham by train or by car. Birmingham is central in England, so it is a convenient meeting place for students from the whole UK, Scotland included.
Because the course lasts three or four days, treat it as a short stay. Zavoré keeps a partner rate at a hotel near the Academy, and you quote Zavoré when booking. Pickup from a station or airport can be added to the booking, priced by where you arrive.
The Academy provides the plasters, primers, waxes, trowels and panels, as well as lunch and refreshments.
You take home finished panels for a portfolio and a Zavoré certificate, and you buy Zavoré materials at trade pricing afterwards. The private course group has a helpline for life, so there is always somewhere to ask about a tricky surface.
A Dundee decorator could add Venetian plaster for villa owners in Broughty Ferry, for new flat owners on the waterfront or for hospitality clients. Advanced students get help to find, price and win a first paid decorative job.
