Venetian plastering training for Peterborough is taught at the Zavoré Academy in Birmingham, not in the city itself. Decorators, plasterers and homeowners from Peterborough and its surroundings make the trip to Birmingham for a three or four day course.
It is open to plasterers who want a premium add on, decorators who want to charge for craft rather than hours alone, developers and landlords who care about finish, and career changers. You can start the Beginner Course without any previous plastering experience.
Peterborough is an interesting city for decorative plaster because it has three distinct housing eras in one place, which are the old cathedral city, the Victorian railway expansion and the modern new town.
The Norman cathedral anchors the historic centre. The arrival of the railways brought rapid growth in the nineteenth century, and many Victorian terraces were built in brick, much of it Fletton brick, a type named after a district of Peterborough. Walls like these were built to breathe, so a lime based plaster or Marmorino is a sympathetic choice when a room is refurbished.
Peterborough was designated a new town in 1967, and it has grown a great deal since, with large modern estates and newer developments. Flat, regular plastered walls in houses and apartments of this kind suit polished plaster and smooth Marmorino well. Between the older and newer parts of the city are hotels, restaurants, offices and retail units where a distinctive wall can set a brand apart.
Beyond the city lie villages and market towns with stone cottages and farmhouses. A Peterborough decorator who can handle all these types of property, from lime on an old solid wall to a burnished finish on a flat new one, is able to say yes to a wide range of enquiries.
The three courses are designed for three different starting points. All run from 10am to 5pm, in small groups of up to six students.
If you are a plasterer who has only worked to a paint ready finish, the Beginner Course will show you how decorative plaster differs, from how the materials behave to how the layers build up. The Advanced Course then adds artificial rock, textured Marmorino, stencil work and polishing to a high gloss. For a personalised agenda, such as a new design or liquid metal, see 1 to 1 Training.
