Short answer. Decorators and plasterers already have the habits that matter most. Careful preparation, steady trowel or brush work and an eye for a flat wall. A Venetian plaster course at the Zavoré Academy in Birmingham builds on that with lime plaster theory, coat systems, Marmorino, polished plaster and metallic finishes, practised on your own boards. Firms that want several people trained together can ask for private training.
Painting and decorating teaches you to fill, sand, mask and work tidily in a lived in home. Those habits count for more on decorative plaster than on emulsion, because any flaw underneath shows through thin coats.
What is new is the material. Venetian plaster is a lime plaster laid in very thin coats with a steel trowel and then burnished, which means pressed hard with the trowel until the surface closes and turns smooth. Lime keeps changing as it cures, so timing matters in a way that paint never asks of you.

Plasterers know trowels, mixes and drying times, so the tools feel familiar from the first hour. The adjustment runs the other way. Decorative coats are far thinner than a skim, and the aim is soft movement across the wall rather than a dead flat surface.
Many plasterers find their trowel pressure and angle are set for skimming, and it takes practice to loosen them. The courses spend time on exactly that, with your technique corrected pass by pass by applicators who still trowel for a living.
If you run a decorating or plastering firm, sending one person at a time can leave gaps on site. We also run private training shaped around what you want your people to learn. Tell us what work you are being asked to quote for, how much experience your team has and what you want them able to do afterwards, and we will plan the days around that.
Group courses are kept small, with no more than six students, so everyone gets real time at the wall. Plasters, primers, waxes, trowels and boards are all supplied, and the boards each person finishes go home with them.
Every student leaves with a Zavoré certificate, trade pricing on materials and access to the helpline, so a question in the middle of a real wall still gets answered. We also help you find, price and win your first paid decorative job. Dates, fees and booking details are kept up to date on the training page and each course listing.

Not for the beginner course, which assumes no experience. The advanced course is for people who have already laid Venetian plaster, and 1 to 1 training can start at any level.
