Yes, almost anyone can learn Venetian plastering. It is a hand skill built on patience, attention and practice rather than a particular background, and the Beginner Course at the Zavoré Academy in Birmingham assumes no experience at all.
People come to it from very different places. If you are wondering whether you fit, this guide goes through who can learn it, what helps, what to be realistic about, and where to start.
Decorators, plasterers, career changers, designers and homeowners can all learn it, because the course starts from the beginning. What you do now changes what you will find familiar, not whether you can learn.
Patience, close attention and a willingness to practise help far more than natural talent. You do not have to be artistic or have worked with plaster before.
It is also fair to say the work is physical. It involves standing, reaching and repeated arm movements across a wall. If you have any concerns, call us before you book and we will talk it through. For an honest look at the harder parts, read is Venetian plastering hard to learn.
It assumes nothing. The 3 day Beginner Course runs from 10am to 5pm, costs £750 per person, and is open to people who have never held a Venetian plaster trowel.
You do not bring tools or materials. Each seat includes authentic Italian plasters, primers, waxes, trowels and panels, along with lunch and refreshments. Classes have up to six students, so the tutor can work with you directly.
The course covers the theory of what Venetian plaster is and how a wall is built up layer by layer. It then moves on to surface preparation and base coats, a wide range of textures, the systems that decide how many coats each product needs, and the finishes Marmorino, polished plaster and metallics from bucket to burnish. At the end you take your finished panels home, along with a Zavoré certificate. You can read the full inside the Beginner Course walkthrough, or book the Beginner Course directly.
Most people should start with the Beginner Course. The Advanced Course and 1 to 1 training suit particular situations, as the table shows.

|---|---|---|
| New to Venetian plaster | Beginner Course | 3 days, £750 |
| A beginner who has done the first course | Advanced Course | 4 days, £1,200 |

The Advanced Course adds deeper theory, artificial rock, textured Marmorino, stencil work, acrylic polish plastering, vein work, sanding, polishing to a high gloss, tinting, coloured waxes and sealers. The 1 to 1 training is shaped entirely around what you want to learn. If you are weighing a group against a personal course, read group course or 1 to 1 training.
