West Yorkshire is a long way north of Birmingham, so we plan jobs in blocks of days and the team stays until the last coat is on.
West Yorkshire is wool and cloth country, and the evidence is everywhere. The valleys of Calderdale and Kirklees are full of stone mills, many converted to apartments and offices. Saltaire, the model village built around Salts Mill near Bradford, is a World Heritage Site, and Halifax has the Piece Hall, a Georgian cloth hall with an open courtyard. Huddersfield’s station and town centre are grand Victorian stone.
Housing follows the hillsides. Leeds has famous rows of back to back houses, as well as Victorian villas in Headingley and Roundhay and warehouse and riverside flats near the Dock and the canal. Bradford has wool merchants’ warehouses in Little Germany, now flats and offices, and big Victorian villas in Manningham. Hebden Bridge has its distinctive stacked terraces, where one house sits above another on the steep valley side.
To the north, Ilkley and Otley belong to Wharfedale and have stone villas and cottages, and Harewood House, a Georgian country house, stands outside Leeds. Wakefield, a cathedral city, and the towns around it add brick and stone terraces and postwar estates, with new apartments rising in the Leeds city centre.
The stone here is millstone grit, thick and hard, and it holds moisture and cold. A good finish must let the wall breathe. In a mill conversion, the walls may be bare stone, brick or old plaster, so each needs assessing on its own.
Back to back and terraced houses often have small rooms, so a pale lime finish can make them feel larger, and the choice of colour is easier to make from a full colour range.
We begin with photos, then a survey. We look at the substrate, flatness, cracks, damp, movement, how the room is used, and access and protection. If a wall needs skimming, stripping or damp repairs first, we say so plainly.
After the sample and price are signed off, we agree dates. The plaster is tinted in Birmingham to the approved sample, from 48 house colours or any NCS reference. Layers are thin and take time to dry between coats, so heat gently in a cold room and have electrics and joinery done first.
In Leeds and Bradford city centres, parking and loading can be restricted, and lifts in apartment blocks may need booking. Please tell us early. Our installation page lists every finish, and you can browse every area we cover.

A breathable lime finish such as limewash or Marmorino suits thick stone walls, as it lets moisture pass through. Acrylic imitations form a film.
Often yes, after a survey. Bare stone, brick or older plaster may need levelling first, and polished finishes need flat walls.
