Stoke on Trent is not one centre but six, and the buildings change from one town to the next. That is why we survey before we price.
The city is made up of Burslem, Tunstall, Hanley, Stoke, Fenton and Longton, joined together over the nineteenth century as the pottery industry grew. Each of those towns has its own centre, its own church and its own streets of red brick terraces built for workers in the potbanks and the mines and ironworks. Many of those terraces are still lived in, with solid walls, narrow rooms and years of repairs behind the paint.
The industry also left its mark in larger buildings. Some of the old pottery works, with their yards and, in places, surviving bottle ovens, are now listed and have been given new uses as workspaces and homes. The Trent and Mersey Canal runs through the city, and canalside warehouses and mills add to the mix of conversions.
Beyond the older terraces, the city has Victorian villas for the owners and managers, interwar and postwar housing, and newer estates. Hanley, the commercial centre, has shops, offices and apartment blocks of many ages.
For plasterwork this gives us three starting points. A terrace wall of old brick and lime can take a breathable finish. A converted works may have bare brick, steel and large open surfaces. A modern flat wants flat boards and the right primer.
Venetian plaster is not what we recommend inside a shower. For a wet room we use tadelakt or microcement, laid on a wall that has been properly prepared and waterproofed.
Small questions can often be answered from photos. For anything larger we survey the walls first, checking what they are made of, how flat they are, any cracks, damp or movement, how the space is used, how we get in and what needs covering.
Once the sample and the price are agreed, we set dates. Because the work is some way from Birmingham, we plan it in blocks of days so the applicators stay on site and lay each coat in order.
Plaster goes on in thin layers and needs time to dry between them. Old terraces can be cold and damp in winter, and cold rooms slow drying, so keeping the heating gently on helps. Our Venetian plaster installation page covers the finishes we apply.
Hanley and the other town centres have restaurants, shops and offices as well as homes. For a commercial fit out the finish has to survive daily wear, so we will talk you through the options. Architects and developers can find what they need on our specification page, and our guide to commercial Venetian plaster gives more background. To see everywhere we work, visit every area we cover.
