Telford is a new town, built from the 1960s onwards around older places such as Wellington, Oakengates, Dawley and Madeley, and named after the engineer Thomas Telford. That gives the borough an unusual mix. A great deal of its housing went up in planned estates during the new town decades, and building has carried on since, with large modern developments at places such as Lawley and Priorslee.
Alongside the estates sits the Ironbridge Gorge, known as a birthplace of the Industrial Revolution and now a World Heritage Site. Brick cottages step up the valley sides at Ironbridge, Coalbrookdale and Jackfield, many with solid walls and a long history of patching. Wellington, the old market town, keeps Victorian terraces and older brick buildings around its centre.
For a plasterer that means two quite different jobs. On a newer estate home the walls are usually plasterboard or a modern skim, flat and predictable once the joints are dealt with. In a cottage in the Gorge the walls may be solid brick, a little uneven, and happier with a finish that lets moisture move through. Listed buildings and conservation areas can need consent for some work, so it is worth checking with the council before you settle on a finish.
Venetian plaster comes in 48 house colours or any NCS reference, and seeing a sample board in the room itself is the most practical way to decide. Our colours page is a good place to narrow the choice first.
Send photos, rough measurements and your postcode, and we will come back with any early questions. We then survey the walls, looking at what they are made of, how flat and sound they are, any cracks, damp or movement, how the room is used, and how we will get in and protect everything. If a wall needs skimming, stripping or a damp problem fixing first, we say so.
When you have signed off a sample and the price, we agree dates. The plaster is tinted to your approved sample in Birmingham before it travels, so the colour is settled before the first coat goes on. Each coat needs to dry before the next, so the room should be clear of other trades, with any new skim finished and dry. A cold, empty house slows drying, so keeping some heat on through the job helps.

Older solid walls generally suit a breathable lime finish such as limewash or Marmorino, rather than an acrylic coating that forms a film. If the building is listed, check what consent you need first.
Yes, provided the plasterboard joints are reinforced and the right primer goes on before the base coats. New build walls are often flat, which suits a polished finish well.
It is not what we recommend inside a shower. Tadelakt or microcement on a properly prepared and waterproofed wall is the better choice there, and Venetian plaster can carry on across the rest of the bathroom.
