Zavoré carries out Venetian plastering in Shrewsbury and across the surrounding part of Shropshire. We are based in Birmingham, where we supply authentic Italian lime based Venetian plaster and other decorative finishes, and our own applicators come out to install them on your walls. Because Shrewsbury is a longer trip from our Birmingham base, we plan the work in blocks of days. The team stays with the job and lays each coat in order, rather than travelling back and forth between them.
Shrewsbury is the county town of Shropshire, and its old centre sits almost entirely inside a loop of the River Severn. That centre keeps a medieval street plan, with narrow passages known locally as shuts, and a large number of timber framed Tudor buildings alongside Georgian brick townhouses. The castle and the abbey are built of red sandstone, and much of the old town lies within a conservation area.
Beyond the river the picture widens. Coleham and Belle Vue have rows of Victorian terraces, while Kingsland, across the water from the Quarry, has larger Victorian and Edwardian villas. Further out are interwar and postwar semis and the newer estates on the edges of town, where walls are mostly plasterboard.
Old Shrewsbury walls tend to be soft, uneven and full of history. Lath and lime, solid brick and infill panels all move and breathe in ways a modern wall does not, so a sealed acrylic coating is the wrong partner for them. Many buildings in the centre are listed, and some changes to their interiors need consent, so it is sensible to ask the council before work is booked.
For bathrooms, we put tadelakt or microcement inside the shower on a waterproofed wall, and keep Venetian plaster to the drier parts of the room.
Start with photos, rough measurements and the postcode, as small questions can often be answered from pictures alone. The survey then looks at the substrate, how flat it is, cracks, damp, movement, how the room is used, and the access and protection the job will need. If a wall should be skimmed, stripped or treated for damp before the finish goes on, you will hear that from us plainly.
Dates are agreed once the sample and the price are signed off. Your material is tinted to the approved sample before it leaves Birmingham, from our 48 house colours or any NCS reference. Then the team arrives for its planned block and works through the coats in sequence. Old buildings in winter can be cold and damp, which slows drying, so gentle background heat helps.

A breathable lime finish such as limewash or Marmorino is the natural choice, because old frames and infill need to move and dry out. Check first whether listed building consent applies.
Usually, yes. Marmorino copes well with a gentle wave in a wall. A highly polished Venetian plaster shows every dip, so for that look the walls may need flattening first, and the survey will tell us.
