Burton is a compact town with a very particular history, and its houses tell that story. Knowing what is behind your walls is the first step to choosing a finish.

The brewing town and its houses

Burton grew rich on brewing. The water, the river and later the railways and the Trent and Mersey Canal made it a centre for beer in the nineteenth century, and the town is still known for brewing and for Marmite. Large brick brewery and maltings buildings still stand across the town, and some have been given new uses.

The workers who kept the breweries running lived in streets of Victorian and Edwardian red brick terraces, many of them close to the centre and across the river in Stapenhill. Winshill and Horninglow add more Victorian and interwar housing, and there are grander villas from the days when brewing families built substantial homes. These houses have solid brick walls, high ceilings and sash windows, and they have usually been decorated many times.

On the edges of town you find postwar estates and more recent developments, and villages such as Branston with older cottages and farm buildings mixed with newer houses. The River Trent runs through the middle, and homes near the river can be damper than those on higher ground, which is worth knowing before any new finish goes onto the walls.

The practical point is simple. An older brick wall should be able to breathe, while a new build wall needs a flat, well primed surface.

Finishes for Burton homes

  • Marmorino for the front rooms and hallways of Victorian terraces, where a soft lime sheen lifts a tall, plain wall.
  • Limewash for cottages and older properties around Branston, where a chalky, matt surface fits an uneven wall.
  • Travertino for a hallway or kitchen in a villa, giving the look of weathered stone without the weight.
  • Venetian plaster for a new build living room, where the board joints have been taped and primed and the walls are flat enough for a polish.

How a Venetian plastering job in Burton upon Trent works

We begin with photos and a few measurements. Where a job needs it, we visit and survey the walls, looking at substrate, flatness, cracks, damp, movement, access and protection. We tell you plainly if a wall needs skimming, stripping or a damp problem fixing before the decorative coats go on.

When the sample and price are agreed, we set dates. With Burton some distance from our Birmingham base, the work is planned in blocks of days, so the applicators stay on the job and lay each coat in order. The plaster is tinted to your approved sample before it leaves Birmingham, in one of 48 house colours or an NCS reference.

You can help by keeping the heating gently on, because cold, damp rooms slow drying. Our page on Venetian plaster installation explains the finish in more detail.

Using your own decorator or learning the skill

If you have a decorator already, we can tint the plaster, base coats and wax and send them tracked to Burton. Decorators who would like to learn can book one of our Venetian plaster courses in Birmingham. Our guide to preparing walls for Venetian plaster is a good read before work starts. Questions about Venetian plastering in Burton upon Trent

Do you work in Burton upon Trent and Stapenhill?

Yes. Our own applicators travel from Birmingham to Burton, Stapenhill, Winshill and the villages around the town.

Is a riverside house in Burton suitable for lime plaster?

Often yes, because lime is breathable. If a wall is damp we will say so plainly, and the cause should be dealt with before any decorative finish is applied.

Which finish suits a Victorian terrace in Burton?

Marmorino or limewash are both lime based and breathable, so they suit solid brick walls and lift the plain surfaces of a tall room.

Can I get a sample before I commit?

Yes. Our sample board shows the colours and finishes, and we agree a final sample with you before any price or date is signed off.
