Venetian plastering in Rutland

Marmorino, limewash and Venetian plaster for stone cottages, market town houses and newer homes, tinted in Birmingham and laid by our own applicators.

Zavoré offers Venetian plastering in Rutland, from Oakham and Uppingham to the stone villages around Rutland Water. We are based in Birmingham, and our own applicators travel out to lay Venetian plaster, Marmorino, limewash, tadelakt and microcement, with every batch tinted to your approved colour before it leaves us. To begin, send a few photos of your walls to sales@zavore.co.uk or order a sample board.

Rutland is a longer trip for us than our nearest areas, so the work is planned in blocks of days. The team stays with the job and lays each coat in order, instead of driving back and forth between coats.

Stone villages, market towns and newer estates in Rutland

Rutland is the smallest historic county in England, and a great deal of it is built from its own ground. Ketton and Clipsham have long been known for their limestone, and that pale, honey coloured stone appears in farmhouses, churches and cottages across the county, sometimes mixed with darker brown ironstone. Roofs are often Collyweston stone slate or thatch.

Oakham, the county town, and Uppingham both have stone market places and high streets lined with old town houses and shops, many of them listed and inside conservation areas. Both towns are also home to large independent schools, whose older buildings sit among the streets.

Away from the old centres, Oakham in particular has grown, with newer estates of brick houses that have plasterboard walls inside. Out in the countryside there are converted barns, working farmhouses and homes looking over Rutland Water.

For a plasterer, that means two very different jobs. A solid stone wall in a village cottage usually has soft lime plaster behind it, uneven by nature, and it needs to breathe. A newer house has flat board walls that can carry a high polish once the joints are reinforced and primed.

Finishes that suit Rutland homes

  • Marmorino for stone cottages and the older town houses of Oakham and Uppingham. It is lime based and breathable, and its soft, matt grain sits happily on a wall that was never perfectly straight.
  • Limewash for barn conversions and farmhouse kitchens, where a cloudy, chalky wall suits exposed beams and stone.
  • Venetian plaster for newer houses, where flat plasterboard walls can take a deeper sheen in a sitting room or hallway.
  • Tadelakt for bathrooms and showers, laid on a properly prepared, waterproofed wall. Venetian plaster is not what we recommend inside a shower.

In a listed building, check with your conservation officer before any change to historic walls. We can give you details of the lime materials to share with them.

How a Venetian plastering job in Rutland runs

First come photos and rough measurements, which often settle the simple questions. Then a survey, where we look at the substrate, flatness, cracks, damp and any movement, how the room is used, and how floors and furniture will be protected. Old stone walls sometimes hold damp or failing plaster, and if a wall needs stripping or a damp problem fixing before any decorative finish, we will tell you plainly.

You approve a sample in your colour, chosen from our 48 house colours or any NCS reference, and the price. Then we agree dates. The plaster is tinted to that sample in Birmingham, and the job is booked as a block of days so each coat goes on in the right order.

Lime finishes dry more slowly in cold, damp rooms, so gentle background heat helps, particularly in a stone cottage in winter. Village lanes can be narrow, so tell us where a van can park and unload. Every finish we lay is on our Venetian plaster installation page.

Using your own builder, or learning the craft

If you already have a builder or decorator you trust around Oakham or Uppingham, we can tint the plaster, primer and wax to your colour and send it by tracked delivery. Our Venetian plaster courses run in Birmingham, and trade accounts suit firms who order regularly.

Questions about Venetian plastering in Rutland

Do you cover the villages around Rutland Water as well as Oakham and Uppingham?

Yes. Our own applicators travel from Birmingham to anywhere in the county, and the work is planned as a block of days so the coats go on in order.

Which finish suits a limestone cottage in Rutland?

A breathable lime finish such as Marmorino or limewash. It lets the stone wall dry out, where an acrylic look alike forms a film over it.

Can Venetian plaster go on in a listed building?

That depends on the building and on consent, so speak to your conservation officer first. We can share details of our lime based materials to help.

Can you finish a newer house in Oakham?

Yes. Plasterboard walls need their joints reinforced and the right primer, and then a polished finish works well because the walls are flat.
