Venetian plastering in the North West

Lime Venetian plaster, Marmorino and limewash across Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Cheshire, Lancashire and Cumbria, laid by our own applicators.

Zavoré supplies and installs Venetian plastering in the North West of England, across Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Cheshire, Lancashire and Cumbria. We are based in Birmingham, our own applicators travel north to install, and authentic Italian lime based plaster is tinted to your approved sample before it leaves us. Start with a sample board, or email photos of your walls and the postcode to sales@zavore.co.uk.

The region is large and its buildings vary a great deal, from city centre towers to Lakeland farmhouses. This page gives the overview, and each county has its own page with local detail.

What we would be plastering across the North West

The North West was shaped by cotton, canals, shipping and railways, and most of its housing comes from the Victorian age or after. Manchester and Salford are red brick cities of warehouses, mills and terraces, many of them now apartments, with newer glass towers beside them. Liverpool, a port, has Georgian townhouses, Albert Dock warehouses and Victorian villas.

Across the Pennine edge, in Lancashire and the hill towns of Greater Manchester, buildings are more often stone, and mill towns such as Blackburn, Burnley and Bolton are rows of terraces with converted mills among them. Preston and Lancaster have Georgian streets, Chester has its Rows and timber framed frontages, and seaside Blackpool and Southport have Victorian and Edwardian resort architecture.

To the north, Cumbria and the Lake District are built of slate and stone, with thick walls and a lime tradition. Around every town are newer estates and flats with plasterboard walls.

So the question is rarely which finish is fashionable, and almost always what the wall is made of. Solid old walls want lime. Boarded walls want reinforced joints and primer. Mill conversions might be very rough or very smooth.

Finishes by building type

  • Marmorino for Georgian and Victorian rooms, from Liverpool townhouses to Lancaster and Chester terraces.
  • Limewash for stone cottages, farmhouses and barns in the Pennine foothills and the Lakes.
  • Concrete effect for warehouse and mill apartments, where brick and steel call for a calmer wall.
  • Polished plaster for new apartments, extensions and commercial rooms with flat, boarded walls.
  • Microcement or tadelakt for showers and wet rooms, as Venetian plaster is not what we recommend in a shower.

How a North West job is organised

We take photos and rough measurements first, then survey the walls before pricing. The survey covers substrate, flatness, cracks, damp, movement, access and protection. If a wall needs skimming, stripping or damp repair, you hear it from us early.

The North West is a long journey from Birmingham, so installations are scheduled in blocks of days. The same team stays on the project and lays each coat in order, rather than driving down and back. We agree dates only after you have approved a sample and a price, and your plaster is tinted to that sample in Birmingham.

Access differs by place. City centre buildings have lifts, loading rules and limited parking, and hill villages and lakeside lanes can be narrow. Tell us early. Our guide to the installation process and our Venetian plaster installation page set out each stage.

Questions about Venetian plastering in the North West

Do you install Venetian plaster across the whole North West?

Our own applicators travel from Birmingham to Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Cheshire, Lancashire and Cumbria. Send photos and a postcode and we will say how a job there would be planned.

Why are North West jobs planned in blocks of days?

Venetian plaster goes on in coats with drying time between them. When the job is far from Birmingham, it makes sense for the team to stay and lay each coat in order.

What suits a Victorian terrace or a mill town house?

If the walls are solid brick or stone, a breathable lime finish such as Marmorino or limewash is the safest choice. We survey the walls to confirm.

Can trade customers open an account?

Yes. Plasterers, decorators and contractors can use our trade accounts, and our courses are held in Birmingham.
