Merseyside has some of the most handsome older housing in the North West, together with dockside conversions and plenty of newer estates. Our Liverpool page, Venetian plaster in Liverpool, concentrates on the city, and this page looks at the whole county.
Liverpool was a great port, and it shows. The Georgian Quarter around Rodney Street, Canning Street and Falkner Square has tall brick townhouses, and the waterfront has the Pier Head and Albert Dock, where warehouses of brick, iron and stone now hold apartments, offices and restaurants. The Baltic Triangle has more recent warehouse conversions. Red sandstone is the stone of the Anglican Cathedral and of many churches and civic buildings.
Streets of Victorian terraces run through Toxteth, Kensington and Anfield, and big Victorian villas stand around Sefton Park, Aigburth and Allerton, with more modest suburban semis stretching beyond. Many older Liverpool houses have grand plaster ceilings, tall sash windows and fireplaces that deserve to be treated with care.
Across the river, the Wirral has Hamilton Square in Birkenhead, Birkenhead Park with its surrounding villas, and Port Sunlight, a model village of Arts and Crafts houses. Hoylake, West Kirby and Heswall have larger family homes. North of Liverpool, Southport is a Victorian seaside town with a tree lined boulevard, Lord Street, and Formby and Crosby have large detached houses by the dunes. St Helens, known for glass making, has its own Victorian terraces and newer estates.
Older solid walls here need a finish that can breathe. Lime based plaster does, whereas an acrylic coating forms a film.
It starts with photos and rough measurements, then a survey of the walls. We check the substrate, flatness, cracks, damp, movement, access and how the room is used. Tall ceilings and old plaster can hide surprises, so we say clearly if skimming, stripping or damp repair has to come first.
When the sample and price are signed off, we agree the dates. Merseyside is a good way from Birmingham, so larger jobs run in blocks of days with the team staying on site and laying each coat in order. The colour is tinted to the approved sample before it leaves Birmingham.
City centre and dockside buildings often have lifts, loading rules and limited parking, while Georgian terraces may mean stairs and several floors. Tell us about these at the start. Our Venetian plaster installation page sets out each stage.
Liverpool has plenty of hotels, bars and restaurants, and designers and architects can read how we help with specification. Anyone using their own decorator can order tinted materials for tracked delivery. For help choosing the shade, read our guide to choosing colour and see every area we cover.

Marmorino is a strong choice, because it is lime based and works with old plaster. If the walls have been skimmed flat, polished plaster is also possible. We survey before recommending.
Yes. Flat boarded walls suit polished plaster, and we check joints, primer and building access rules first.
