How to Choose a Venetian Plaster Colour (and Why Samples Matter)

Choosing a colour for a plastered wall is a different exercise from choosing paint, because the colour does not sit on the surface. It lives inside the material, and the trowel, the burnish and the light all have a say in how it finally reads. Here is how to get it right first time.

How colour gets into plaster

Every Zavoré tub is machine-tinted before it ships: pigment dosed by machine through the entire tub, so the colour is consistent from first trowel to last and runs through the full depth of the material. This matters for more than accuracy. A surface whose colour goes all the way through wears honestly; a knock reveals the same colour, not a white scar.

Why the same tub gives different walls

Plaster is worked, and the working shades it. Where the trowel compresses harder, the colour deepens and the sheen tightens; where the pass is softer, the surface stays lighter and more open. This is the movement people fall in love with, and it means a plaster colour is a range, not a single flat note. A swatch on a screen cannot show it. Even a flat painted sample cannot show it.

Light is the other half of the colour

A north-facing room cools every colour in it; low evening sun warms and deepens; artificial light at night can turn a subtle grey-green into something else entirely. The same wall is several colours a day. This is a feature of the material, but it means a colour must be judged in the room it will live in, at the times of day you actually use the room.

The habit that prevents expensive mistakes

Order the sample boards, always. We post three hand-trowelled A5 boards in any finishes and any tints. Stand them against the wall in question and look at them at morning, afternoon and night, next to the floor, the joinery and the fabrics that will share the room. Ten minutes of looking at the real material in real light answers questions no photograph can.

Beyond the library

Our own library holds forty-eight custom colours, and the printed Colour Booklet puts all of them in your hands for fifteen pounds, credited back against your first material order. Beyond the library we match any NCS reference exactly. And if all you have is a cushion, a photograph or a flake of the old paint, send it in: we will match the colour for you and tint it through the tub.
