Lime Venetian plaster, Marmorino and polished plaster for Edinburgh homes, tinted in Birmingham and laid by our own applicators in planned blocks of days.
Zavoré offers Venetian plastering in Edinburgh for flats, townhouses, hotels and restaurants. We supply authentic Italian lime based Venetian plaster, our own applicators travel from our Birmingham base to lay it, and every batch is tinted to the colour on your approved sample before it leaves us. To start, order a sample board, or email photos, rough measurements and your postcode to sales@zavore.co.uk.
Edinburgh is a long way north of Birmingham, so an installation is organised as a block of consecutive days. The applicators stay for the length of the job and work through the coats in order.
Edinburgh’s Old Town and New Town together form a World Heritage Site, and the city is built largely of stone. The Georgian New Town, planned in the late eighteenth century, has pale sandstone terraces and squares, from Charlotte Square to Heriot Row and Moray Place. Inside are tall rooms, sash windows, and often original plaster cornices and ceiling roses.
Most Edinburgh homes, however, are flats. The tenement is the typical Edinburgh building, a stone block of several storeys around a common stair, and the Victorian streets of Marchmont, Bruntsfield, Newington and Morningside are full of them. Stockbridge mixes Georgian and Victorian housing beside the Water of Leith, and Dean Village keeps old mill buildings that are now homes. Leith has turned warehouses and dockside buildings into apartments, and areas such as Fountainbridge and Quartermile are home to newer developments.
Listed buildings in Scotland are placed in Category A, B or C, and permission for changes inside them is handled through the council. If your home is listed or sits in a conservation area, it is worth checking before you start.
For the walls themselves, stone and old lime plaster in tenements want a breathable finish. New apartments are more likely to be plasterboard and need their joints reinforced and the right primer. We decide what to recommend only after we know which you have.
The first step is a set of photos and a few details. A survey follows when needed, checking the substrate, how flat the wall is, cracks, damp and movement, how the room is used, and access and protection. In a tenement, access means the common stair, so we ask about floor level, lifts and what neighbours need to know. We say plainly if a wall needs skimming, stripping or damp resolved first.
Once you have approved a sample and price, we agree dates. The colour comes from 48 house colours or any NCS reference and is tinted in Birmingham. Parking in central Edinburgh is limited and often permit controlled, so it helps to arrange a place for the van early. Edinburgh can be cold and damp, and rooms like that dry slowly, so keep gentle heating on through the job.
If you are a designer or architect, our specification page explains how to work with us, and our installation page lists each finish we lay.
If your own decorator will apply the finish, we tint the plaster, base coats and wax to your colour and send them tracked to Edinburgh. Courses take place in Birmingham. You can browse every area we cover.
Our guides to Victorian, Georgian and Edwardian coving and decorative plaster ceilings are worth reading if your rooms have original plasterwork.
Yes. We plan around the common stair and floor level, and we protect floors and shared areas. The work is arranged as consecutive days once the sample and price are signed off.
Marmorino or limewash, because both are lime based and breathable. Cornice repairs can be part of the same plan.
