Venetian plastering in Aberdeen

Lime Venetian plaster, Marmorino and polished plaster for the Granite City, tinted in Birmingham and laid by our own applicators in planned blocks of days.

Zavoré supplies and installs authentic Italian lime based Venetian plaster, and this page is about Venetian plastering in Aberdeen. We are based in Birmingham, our own applicators travel north to lay each coat, and the plaster is tinted to the colour on your approved sample before it leaves us. Send photos of your walls, rough measurements and your postcode to sales@zavore.co.uk, or order a sample board to start choosing.

Aberdeen is a very long way from Birmingham, so an installation is planned as consecutive days on site. The team lays the coats in order and does not travel back and forth in the middle of the job.

Granite houses and what they mean for the finish

Aberdeen is the Granite City, and the name is earned. Local granite, with Rubislaw the best known quarry, built Union Street, Marischal College and the long streets of Victorian and Edwardian tenements in Ferryhill, Rosemount and Rubislaw. The West End has granite villas and terraces with large rooms and good ceiling heights. Old Aberdeen, near King’s College, keeps a cobbled High Street and older houses, and Footdee, at the harbour mouth, is a small fishing village of low cottages.

Further out, along the Dee, Cults, Bieldside and Milltimber have larger houses in generous gardens, while the edges of the city carry newer housing estates, often timber framed with plasterboard walls. The oil and gas industry has long brought money into the city, and apartments, offices and hotels have followed.

Granite is dense, cold to the touch and slow to warm, and a thick granite wall does not behave like brick. In many older homes the inner surface is plaster on a lining, which may have been patched or painted over several times. A new decorative surface needs to sit on something sound. We therefore look hard at the wall before we quote, and we tell you if repairs or damp work should come first.

Finishes that work in Aberdeen

  • Marmorino for tenement and villa rooms in the West End and Ferryhill, where a lime based surface with a fine, marble like sheen suits tall, light rooms.
  • Polished plaster for new flats and offices, when the walls are flat and you want depth and reflection.
  • Limewash for cottages and fishing village homes, where a soft, mineral look fits small, low rooms.
  • Liquid metal for a feature wall in a restaurant, hotel or bar, where a metallic surface adds warmth.
  • Tadelakt for bathrooms, as Venetian plaster is not suitable inside a shower.

Greys are the natural colour in a granite city, and our colour range has many, along with warm stones and soft whites.

How an Aberdeen job runs

It starts with photos and a rough room list. We survey the substrate, flatness, cracks, damp and movement, then ask how the room is used and how we get in and protect floors. If a wall needs skimming, stripping or damp resolved first, we say so plainly.

Once the sample and price are signed off, we agree dates. The colour is tinted in Birmingham, from our 48 house colours or any NCS reference. In the centre and in tenement streets, parking may be restricted, and tenement flats have shared stairs, so tell us about both. Cold rooms dry slowly, and Aberdeen’s long, chilly winters make a plan for gentle heating worthwhile.

For hotel, bar and office projects, designers can find help on our specification page. See our installation page for the services we offer.

Plaster supplied for your own decorator

If a local decorator will apply the finish, we tint the plaster to your colour and send it tracked with the base coats and wax. Our courses are held in Birmingham. You can find every area we cover in one place.

Further reading on colour is in our article on grey Venetian plaster, and the guide to hallways and stairs suits tenement entrances.

Questions about Venetian plastering in Aberdeen

Do you travel to Aberdeen for Venetian plastering?

Yes. Our own applicators travel from Birmingham, and the job is planned in consecutive days so they stay on site until the coats are complete. Dates follow the signed off sample and price.

Can you plaster the inside of a granite house?

Yes. We survey the inner surface first, because the finish must go onto a sound, dry wall. If repairs or damp work are needed, we explain them before decoration.

Which finish suits an Aberdeen tenement flat?

Marmorino is a good choice for older walls, as it is lime based and breathable. A flat with plasterboard would suit polished plaster or Venetian plaster after proper preparation.

Can I order plaster for my own tradesperson in Aberdeen?

Yes. We tint it to your colour and send it tracked, together with base coats and wax.
