Bradford has a distinctive set of buildings, many of them built with confidence in the wool boom. They deserve a finish chosen for the wall, so we survey before we recommend anything.
Bradford was a world centre of the wool trade in the nineteenth century, and the money went into stone. Little Germany, the merchants’ district near the centre, is full of warehouses built in an Italian palazzo style for the city’s textile traders, and City Hall has its Italianate tower. Mills dominate the skyline, none more famous than Lister Mills at Manningham, with its tall chimney and now a large apartment conversion.
The same trade produced Saltaire, the model village near Shipley built by the mill owner Titus Salt, now a World Heritage Site, with neat streets of stone terraces. Further up the valleys, Bingley, Keighley and Haworth have stone cottages and terraces, and the stone itself is blackened or honey coloured sandstone. Around the Manningham and Heaton areas, large stone villas were built for merchants, while the inner suburbs have long rows of terraces, some of them back to back.
This affects the work. Stone walls in Bradford houses are thick and solid, and decades of paint and wallpaper can lie over old lime plaster. Mill apartments tend to have exposed masonry next to new boards. Postwar and modern estates use plasterboard.
It starts with photos and rough measurements, then a survey. We look at the substrate, flatness, cracks, damp and movement, plus how the room is used and how we get in. If old walls need stripping, skimming or damp repair, you will hear it from us plainly.
Once you approve a sample and the price, we agree dates. Bradford is a good way north of Birmingham, so larger projects are scheduled in blocks of days with the team on site and each coat laid in order. Your plaster is tinted to the approved sample before it leaves Birmingham.
