Huddersfield sits where the Pennines begin, and its houses are built of the hill stone around them. That tells us a good deal about what to put on the walls.
The centre is a Victorian textile town, rebuilt in stone in the nineteenth century largely on land owned by the Ramsden estate. St George’s Square, dominated by the columned frontage of the railway station, shows how confident the town was. The Lockwood Viaduct and the stone mill complexes that follow the rivers and canals complete the picture, and some of those mills have become offices and apartments.
Wealthy mill owners and merchants built big villas on the hills above the town, notably in Edgerton, Greenhead and Lindley, where the clock tower by the architect Edgar Wood is a local landmark. Closer to the centre, terraces of dark local stone run up the slopes, and on the older hillsides there are weavers’ cottages with long rows of mullioned windows on the upper floor, which lit the looms.
Beyond the town, Holmfirth, Marsden and Slaithwaite are Pennine villages of stone houses, cottages and canal side mills. Postwar housing and newer estates fill the gaps, often built with plasterboard.
All of that stone has consequences. Thick walls hold moisture, so the plaster on them should be able to breathe, and Pennine weather means damp matters in almost every older house.
We begin with photos and rough measurements and then survey the walls. We look at the substrate, flatness, cracks, damp, movement and the way the room is used. If something needs stripping, skimming or a damp problem solving first, you will hear it from us before a price is agreed.
Huddersfield is a good way from Birmingham, so we plan work in blocks of days. The team stays on the job and lays each coat in order, rather than driving back and forth. Dates are agreed once you have approved your sample and the price, and your plaster is tinted to that sample in Birmingham beforehand.
Hillside streets, steep drives and terraces without private parking are common here, so tell us about access. Cold, damp rooms slow drying, which is worth bearing in mind over winter in an older house. Our limewash installation page and our Venetian plaster installation page explain the details. If you want to know more about preparation, see our article on preparing walls for Venetian plaster.
If you are a plasterer or decorator wanting to add the finish to your work, our courses run in Birmingham, and trade accounts make repeat orders easy. Architects and interior designers can use the specification page. We also send tinted materials across the UK, and you can see every area we cover.

Limewash or Marmorino. Both are lime based and breathable, which suits thick stone walls. An acrylic look alike forms a film that can trap moisture.
Yes, subject to a survey. Exposed masonry and new boarded walls are prepared differently, and polished finishes need flat walls.
