Ilkley is a small town with a distinctive set of homes, so we spend time understanding the building before talking about finishes.
Ilkley was a Roman settlement, but the town you see today is mostly Victorian. Its fame as a spa town, with hydropathic establishments on the edge of the moor, brought visitors and then residents, and merchants from Bradford and Leeds built villas on the slopes above the River Wharfe. The result is streets of large stone houses with bay windows, gables and generous gardens, with the moor rising behind them.
The building stone here is gritstone, hard and weathered, and the walls of older houses are thick. The Edwardian era and the early twentieth century added more villas in a free Arts and Crafts spirit. The centre has terraced shops, the Edwardian King’s Hall and Winter Gardens, and the historic Manor House stands beside the parish church.
In the dales around, Addingham and Burley in Wharfedale have stone cottages, terraces and former mill buildings, while Otley is an old market town in the valley. More recent houses are often built in a stone style, but with modern block and plasterboard walls inside.
The mix tells us something. Large Victorian rooms with high ceilings offer wide wall areas that reward a quiet, breathable lime finish, while a recent extension needs preparation as a boarded surface.
It starts with photos and rough measurements, then a survey. We check the substrate, how flat the surface is, any cracks, damp or movement, and how the room is used. Large old houses can hide patched plaster and past damp, so if anything needs fixing first, we tell you before the price is agreed.
Ilkley is a good way from Birmingham, so we plan the work in blocks of days. The team stays and lays each coat in order, rather than travelling to and fro. When you have signed off the sample and price, we agree dates, and your plaster is tinted to the sample in Birmingham before it leaves.
Furniture, floors and fittings need protecting during the work, particularly in a lived in family home, and a gentle, steady heat helps coats dry in a cold house. Narrow streets near the centre and long drives in the larger houses both affect how materials are unloaded, so mention them when you get in touch. Marmorino is a good fit for solid stone walls, because it is lime based and breathable. Acrylic look alikes form a film, which is a poor match for old walls.
