Venetian plastering in Leeds

Lime Venetian plaster, Marmorino and polished plaster for Leeds homes and apartments, tinted in Birmingham and laid by our own applicators.

Zavoré supplies and installs Venetian plastering in Leeds for houses, flats, bars and shops. We are based in Birmingham, our own applicators travel to the job, and authentic Italian lime based plaster is tinted to your approved sample before it leaves us. To get started, order a sample board or email photos of the walls and your postcode to sales@zavore.co.uk.

Leeds is built from several different cities at once, with Victorian grandeur at the centre, stone terraces in the suburbs and glass towers by the river. We survey the walls first and choose the finish second.

The homes and buildings of Leeds

The city grew rich on wool, cloth and engineering, and the Victorians left their mark in the centre. The Town Hall, the Corn Exchange and the shopping arcades of the Victoria Quarter and Thornton’s Arcade are grand reminders of that era, while Park Square keeps a Georgian character. Along the river and the canal, in areas such as Holbeck, Granary Wharf and The Calls, old warehouses, mills and foundries have become apartments with high ceilings and big windows. Newer towers have joined them around the south bank of the river.

Beyond the centre, Leeds is famous for its terraced housing, including the back to back houses that are a local type. Headingley, Hyde Park and Burley are lined with stone and brick terraces, many let to students. Further north, Roundhay, Chapel Allerton, Moortown and Adel have larger Victorian and Edwardian villas and interwar family houses, and the outer suburbs and the towns beyond, such as Horsforth, have a mix of stone cottages and newer estates.

Much of the older housing is gritstone, a durable Yorkshire stone, and the walls behind the plaster can be thick, solid and damp prone. Newer apartments, by contrast, have plasterboard and stud walls. So a Leeds job might need breathable lime, careful preparation of old plaster, or flat boarded walls ready for polishing.

Finishes that suit Leeds homes

  • Marmorino for the Victorian villas of Roundhay and Chapel Allerton, where high ceilings and bay windows suit a soft lime surface. Our Marmorino guide explains the look.
  • Limewash for stone terraces and cottages, giving a matt, mineral wall without trapping moisture.
  • Concrete effect for riverside and warehouse apartments, where steel windows and brick call for something restrained.
  • Polished plaster for new city centre flats and for bars and restaurants, as long as the walls are flat.
  • Microcement for bathrooms and shower areas, since we do not recommend Venetian plaster inside a shower.

How a Venetian plastering job in Leeds runs

We begin with photos and rough measurements. Then we survey the walls, checking the substrate, how flat they are, any cracks, damp or movement, and how the room is used. If a wall needs skimming, stripping or a damp problem fixing, we say so before you decide.

Leeds is a fair way north of Birmingham, so we plan larger jobs in blocks of days. The team stays on the job, lays each coat in order and does not drive back and forth. Dates are agreed after you sign off the sample and the price, and the plaster is tinted to that sample in Birmingham first.

City centre jobs often involve lifts, shared stairwells and limited loading space, so tell us early about building rules and parking. Our Venetian plaster installation page explains each step. If you are working on a hallway, our article on hallways and stairs may help.

Developers, designers and your own decorator

Leeds has a busy property and hospitality scene, and designers and architects can see how we help with specifications. A decorator you already use can lay our plaster, which we tint and send tracked. For people wanting to learn the craft, our courses run in Birmingham, and trade accounts are available. You can also look at every area we cover.

Questions about Venetian plastering in Leeds

Do you do Venetian plastering in Leeds yourselves?

Yes. Our own applicators travel from Birmingham. Larger jobs are planned in blocks of days so the team can lay each coat in sequence.

What suits a stone terrace in Headingley or Burley?

Solid stone walls are best with lime, such as Marmorino or limewash, because those finishes let moisture pass. An acrylic coating forms a film that can hold it in.

Can you plaster a converted mill or warehouse flat in Leeds?

Yes, once we have surveyed the walls. Bare brick, old paint and new boards each need different preparation, and we explain what is involved.

What should I use in a Leeds shower room?

Tadelakt or microcement on a properly waterproofed, prepared wall. We do not recommend Venetian plaster inside a shower.
