Tadelakt in Glasgow

Moroccan lime burnished with a stone and soaped, for Glasgow showers, wet rooms and spa rooms. It sits on a tanked wall, and our own team lays it by hand.

Home/Tadelakt/Glasgow

Zavoré installs tadelakt in Glasgow for showers, wet rooms, basins, niches and spa rooms. Tadelakt is Moroccan lime plaster, burnished with a stone and then soaped, which makes it water resistant with no film or sealer on top. We are based in Birmingham and our own applicators travel to Glasgow to burnish it by hand. Start with a burnished sample board in your colour.

Because Glasgow is far from Birmingham, a tadelakt job here is planned as a block of days, so the same people carry the render, the coats and the burnish through in order.

Glasgow bathrooms, soft water and solid walls

Glasgow is known for soft water, and that is good news for lime. The enemy of tadelakt is anything acidic, and limescale remover is the usual culprit in hard water areas. In Glasgow there is less limescale to fight, so a mild soap wash is often all the wall needs. Soap is how tadelakt is made and how it is looked after.

The walls are the other half of the story. A Glasgow tenement bathroom often sits against a solid sandstone wall or a lath and plaster partition. Tadelakt wants a mineral, absorbent, stable base, such as a sand and cement or lime render. Stone is a good bed. A flexing partition or loose lath is not, and a bare modern skim is a poor bed for it. In a shower we would build the wall up properly, tank it and render it before any lime goes on. That preparation is a rendering job before it is a decorating one.

Victorian villas in Pollokshields and Kelvinside have the space for a proper wet room, and flats in Finnieston and Glasgow Harbour have compact bathrooms where a curved niche and a grout free shower save the eye a great deal of work.

Showers, niches and curves, in Glasgow rooms

Our tadelakt finishes are made for a short list of places.

  • Showers and wet rooms with no grout to go black and no silicone to peel.
  • Basins, niches and built in benches, where the surface runs over the curve in one piece.
  • Curved walls and rounded corners, which tadelakt prefers to sharp arrises.
  • Hotel suites and spa rooms, including a hammam.

Colour comes from lime fast pigments, so expect clay reds, ochres, olive greens, plaster pinks, off whites and charcoals rather than anything vivid. The sheen is soft, with faint mottling, and no two panels burnished on different days match exactly. If that bothers you, tadelakt is probably the wrong finish, and we would rather say so now. It is also not for busy floors, and it needs soft, rounded edges.

How a tadelakt job in Glasgow runs

We survey first. We look at what the wall is, how flat and sound it is, any damp or movement, how the room is used, and the access and protection needed. In a tenement that includes the common stair. We say plainly if a wall needs rebuilding before tadelakt can go near it.

Colour is agreed on a sample and tinted in our 48 house colours before it leaves Birmingham. Tadelakt has a short burnishing window, too early and you drag it, too late and nothing closes, so the wet areas are finished in one go and a block of days suits it well. Cold, damp rooms slow drying, so we ask for gentle heating. The process is set out on our tadelakt installation page.

Buying tadelakt, and looking after it

We sell the plaster in tubs, tinted to your colour, with the finishing soap and olive oil soap for later care, from our shop with tracked delivery to Glasgow. We will also tell you it is the hardest finish we stock. The burnishing is physical, the window is short, and a shower that has not been closed properly will wet through and you will only find out later. For a bathroom you use daily, we would rather lay it. Decorators and builders can ask about a trade account.

Looking after it is simple. Wipe the shower down after use, wash with mild soap, and avoid bleach, limescale removers, bathroom sprays and scouring pads. A dull or marked patch is re soaped and re polished in place, and every few years a wall benefits from a fresh soaping.

Tadelakt is the answer for water, but other rooms want other things. microcement in Glasgow suits a seamless floor and shower together, and marmorino in Glasgow and polished plaster in Glasgow suit the dry rooms. For soft old walls see limewash in Glasgow or clay plaster in Glasgow. Cool grey is covered in concrete effect plaster in Glasgow, and shimmer in liquid metal in Glasgow. The whole range is on our page for decorative specialists in Glasgow, and the Venetian side is told in Venetian plastering in Glasgow.

Questions about tadelakt in Glasgow

Is tadelakt waterproof enough for a shower in Glasgow?

Yes, when it is burnished and soaped properly. The polishing closes the surface and the soap reacts with the lime to repel water. It still sits on a tanked, correctly rendered wall, exactly as tile would. The waterproofing is a system and tadelakt is the visible part of it.

Does Glasgow's soft water help tadelakt?

It does no harm and often helps, because there is less limescale and so less temptation to use acidic limescale removers, which lime cannot tolerate. A mild soap and water is the routine, whatever the water.

Can tadelakt go on a tenement bathroom wall?

Yes on a sound solid wall, once the base is built up with tanking and render. Loose lath and flexing partitions are not a good bed, and a bare modern skim is a poor one. We check which you have at the survey.

Can tadelakt go over plasterboard in a new Glasgow flat?

Not directly. In a wet area the board needs tanking and a suitable rendered base built up over it first. In a dry room a suitable base over board can work. We tell you which applies when we survey.
