Lime and marble grain compressed to a soft satin, for Glasgow rooms where the walls are good but not perfect. Laid by our own applicators, whole rooms at a time.
Zavoré supplies and installs marmorino in Glasgow, and it is the finish we reach for when a Glasgow wall is good but not perfect. Marmorino is lime putty carrying graded marble grain, laid in two coats and compressed with the trowel to a soft satin, never a mirror. Our own applicators travel from our Birmingham base to lay it. Order a sample board, hold it against your floor and joinery in daylight, then tell us about the room.
Because Glasgow is a long way from Birmingham, a room here is organised as a block of days, and the team stays to keep the coats in order.
Walk into a Glasgow tenement front room and you meet the same story again and again. A tall room, a bay window, a cornice and walls that have been patched, filled, papered and repainted for a hundred years. Those walls are rarely flat. A polished finish shows every dip, but marmorino has more body, and its grain scatters light where a mirror would concentrate it. It sits over a sound but imperfect wall and takes some of the unevenness out rather than advertising it.
It is also lime, which matters in a sandstone city. Solid stone walls need to let moisture move, and marmorino is breathable where an acrylic skin is not. It tolerates a fraction more movement than a high polish, which is why we choose it for older lath and plaster rooms and timber framed buildings where a hard brittle skin would craze. Marmorino is the old Venetian render, used outside on facades as much as inside, which tells you how hard it sets.
In the West End, Hyndland, Dowanhill and Hillhead are full of rooms like this. Newer flats in Finnieston, Glasgow Harbour and the Merchant City are more likely to be board, and marmorino works there too once the joints are reinforced and the right primer is on.
This is the finish for when you want the material everywhere, not on one feature wall. Our marmorino finishes go on faster than a polish, run across a ceiling and take internal corners and window reveals without the drama a reflective surface causes at a change of plane.
You choose the sheen with the trowel. Left light, marmorino sits close to matt, with soft cloud. Worked harder it comes up to an eggshell or satin with the grain still showing, and waxed it deepens and picks up a low shine without becoming reflective. Colour stays much closer to the shade you chose than a polish, and pale tones stay chalky, so it is the easier finish to match to a stone floor, joinery or an existing paint. It is not for a shower enclosure, where tadelakt belongs.
We survey first, checking the substrate, flatness, cracks, damp, movement, how the room is used, access and protection. In a tenement that means the common stair and the floor level. If a wall needs skimming, stripping or damp fixing, we say so plainly. Painted walls are usually fine if the paint is sound, washed and primed. Flaking paint or an old oil coating comes off first.
Once the sample and price are agreed, we fix dates. The colour comes from 48 house colours or any NCS reference and is tinted to the approved sample before it leaves Birmingham. The real constraint is the wet edge. A wall must be finished in one go, because a joint that sets before the next pass reaches it shows as a line later. A large open room is a two or three person job. Our Venetian plaster installation page covers the full process.
Of the classic Venetian finishes, marmorino is the one to learn on. There is no burnish window to miss and the grain hides small inconsistencies. A decorator adding a finish to their offer could start here, and a short course in Birmingham is the way to learn it properly through our training page. We sell the plaster, primer and wax from the shop with tracked delivery to Glasgow, and firms can ask about a trade account. If it is one room at home and you have never held a trowel, the wet edge is what catches people out.
If marmorino is not quite right, polished plaster in Glasgow gives a mirror, and clay plaster in Glasgow and limewash in Glasgow give softer matt walls. tadelakt in Glasgow and microcement in Glasgow take the wet rooms, concrete effect plaster in Glasgow gives a cool trowelled grey, and liquid metal in Glasgow gives one glowing wall. The wider range is under decorative specialists in Glasgow, and our Venetian work is set out in Venetian plastering in Glasgow.
Same family, different grind. Polished plaster uses marble ground to a powder and is burnished until it reflects. Marmorino keeps a coarser graded marble, so it finishes with visible grain and a satin sheen at most. Marmorino is more forgiving to lay and kinder to an imperfect wall.
Usually, if the paint is sound and well stuck down. We wash the wall, make good any damage and prime it so the lime has something to key into. Flaking paint or an old oil based coating comes off first.
Often, yes. It is breathable lime, it sits happily on older walls with a century of repairs, and it tolerates a little more movement than a high polish. We still survey for loose lath or damp before we say yes.
It is water resistant, especially once waxed, and it is good in a bathroom away from the shower because there are no grout lines. Inside a shower or steam room the honest answer is tadelakt.
