Lime and marble burnished to a stone shine, laid by our own applicators in Glasgow tenement front rooms, hallways and city flats. Start with a sample board.
Zavoré supplies and installs polished plaster in Glasgow, from tall tenement drawing rooms to new flats along the Clyde. It is slaked lime and marble ground to a powder, laid in thin coats and burnished with a steel trowel until it reflects like honed stone. We are based in Birmingham and our own applicators travel to Glasgow to lay it. The place to start is a sample board in the colour you are considering.
Glasgow is a long way from Birmingham, so we plan a job here as a block of days. The team stays on site and lays each coat in order.
Glasgow is a city of sandstone tenements, red and blond, running street after street through the West End, the Southside and the East End. Many have tall ceilings, bay windows and cornice, and the front rooms are exactly the proportions a burnished wall rewards. Hyndland, Dowanhill, Hillhead and Dennistoun are full of them.
The walls are another matter. A polished surface reflects, and a reflection shows every hollow and every patched chase. A tenement wall that has had a century of repairs will not be flat, and many internal partitions and ceilings in older flats are lath and plaster, which can move. Polished plaster does not belong on loose lath or a flexing frame. There, marmorino or limewash is the better answer, and we say so at the survey.
Where the wall is sound stone backed plaster, or can be skimmed flat first, polished plaster comes into its own. Newer Glasgow is different. Conversions in the Merchant City and flats in Finnieston, Glasgow Harbour and Pacific Quay are mostly plasterboard. On sound board with the joints reinforced and the right primer, the walls are usually flat enough to take a polish without drama.
Our polished plaster finishes suit a handful of rooms very well, and we would rather you spent the budget there than everywhere.
Winter days are short in Glasgow, so a living room spends many hours under lamps. Burnished lime catches lamplight well and shifts as you walk past it. Inside a shower enclosure we would use tadelakt instead, because standing water and constant heat are not for polished plaster.
It starts with photographs and a call. We then survey the walls for substrate, flatness, cracks, damp, movement, how the room is used, access and protection. In a tenement flat, access means the common stair, so tell us the floor and how materials will come up. We say plainly if a wall needs skimming, stripping or a damp problem fixing first.
Once the sample and price are signed off, we agree dates. The plaster comes in 48 house colours or any NCS reference and is tinted to the approved sample before it leaves Birmingham. The burnish has a short window on any patch, so a wall is finished in one go and a large room is planned for more than one pair of hands. Cold, damp rooms slow drying, so keep the heating on gently through the job.
Every finish we lay is listed on our Venetian plaster installation page.
If your own decorator will apply it, we sell the plaster, primer and wax from our shop with tracked delivery to Glasgow. Be honest with yourself about the burnish. It is the hardest finish we sell, and most first attempts read as textured paint. Decorators can learn it on a course in Birmingham through our training page, and trade accounts are available for firms who lay it regularly.
Polished plaster is one of several finishes we lay in the city. For calmer, grainier walls look at marmorino in Glasgow or clay plaster in Glasgow. For soft lime on old walls there is limewash in Glasgow, and for showers and wet rooms tadelakt in Glasgow or microcement in Glasgow. If you want a cool grey wall read about concrete effect plaster in Glasgow, and for a single glowing feature wall liquid metal in Glasgow. The full range is on our page for decorative specialists in Glasgow, and the wider story is told in Venetian plastering in Glasgow.
Often yes, on sound stone backed plaster or on walls we can skim flat first. It does not suit loose lath or a partition that flexes, and a survey tells us which you have. Where a wall will not take a polish, marmorino or limewash is the better choice.
Usually, yes. New flats are plasterboard, and polished plaster does well on board with the joints reinforced and the correct primer. The walls tend to be flatter than in a Victorian flat, which is what a reflective surface wants.
On bathroom walls, yes, once waxed, and there is no grout line for mould to sit in. Inside the shower enclosure itself we would use tadelakt, which is made for running water.
