Microcement in Glasgow

Seamless microcement for Glasgow bathrooms, wet rooms and walls, laid by our own team. We check the floor and the tiles first, because the base decides everything.

Zavoré installs microcement in Glasgow for bathrooms, wet rooms, walls and, where the floor allows, floors. Microcement is a thin cement based coating trowelled over a primed and reinforced base, so the surface runs on with no grout lines and no joints. We are based in Birmingham and our own applicators travel to Glasgow to lay it. Start with a sample board, then send us photographs of the room.

Glasgow is a long way from Birmingham, so the work is planned in blocks of days. The team stays on the job rather than travelling back and forth between coats.

Floors, tiles and bathrooms in Glasgow flats

Most Glasgow homes are flats, and the answer to a microcement question usually starts with the floor. In a sandstone tenement the floors are generally timber on joists, and timber moves. A springy floor will crack any rigid seamless surface, however good the material, so a tenement floor has to be stiffened and boarded properly before we would lay over it. On a bathroom wall the question is simpler, which is why walls and showers are where most tenement microcement goes.

Many tenement bathrooms have been tiled over the decades, and tiling over is half the appeal. Microcement can often go over existing tiles that are firmly stuck, degreased and keyed. Drummy or loose tiles come off first, and the grout lines are filled and reinforced so they do not shadow through later.

Newer Glasgow is a different case. Flats in Finnieston, Glasgow Harbour and Pacific Quay often have screed floors and board walls, and Merchant City conversions sit in older commercial buildings. A screed has to be dry all the way through, not just on top, and movement joints in the structure are carried through the finish rather than covered over.

Where microcement works, and where it does not

Our microcement finishes earn their keep in a short list of places.

  • Bathrooms and wet rooms with a floor that turns up the wall and into the shower with no grout.
  • Shower benches, niches and reveals.
  • Kitchen worktops and splashbacks that need daily wiping.
  • Open plan ground floors in newer flats with no thresholds between rooms.
  • Hotel, bar and office fit outs that need to look calm.

Be clear about what the sealer does. It is the sealer that makes the surface washable, not the cement, and the tanking behind a shower must still be done properly, just as it would be under tile. A microcement surface is only as good as its primer, its mesh and its sealer. We would not suggest it on a wall that will carry heavy fixings, or as a cheap stand in for tiling, because the preparation is where the money goes.

How a microcement job in Glasgow runs

Seamless work is decided at the substrate, so we survey before we price. We check what the floor and walls are made of, how flat and sound they are, cracks, damp, movement, how the room is used, access and protection. Small questions can often be answered from photographs first. In a tenement, access means the common stair, so tell us the floor level and how materials will come up. We say plainly if a floor needs stiffening or a damp problem needs fixing before anything goes down.

Colour and sheen are agreed on a sample before work starts, and the finish is tinted before it leaves Birmingham. Matt has the calmest look and shows water marks more readily on a floor, so we talk through the sealer rather than default to one. Because a floor is laid wet in one go, a block of days works well for a bathroom, and cold, damp rooms slow drying. The full process is set out on our microcement installation page.

Buying seamless finishes for your own decorator

Here we want to be exact about what we sell. We install microcement ourselves. For people using their own decorator we supply lime built seamless finishes instead. Pastellone is for floors and walls, and beton stucco gives a concrete look on walls, along with the primer, wax and sealer behind them. Both are tinted to your colour and sent by tracked delivery to Glasgow from our shop. A confident decorator can learn beton stucco on a board, but a floor or a bathroom is one we would ask you to leave to us. Firms laying seamless finishes regularly can open a trade account.

If a seamless wall is not quite what you need, try tadelakt in Glasgow for showers with a softer, burnished feel, or concrete effect plaster in Glasgow for a trowelled grey wall above floor level. polished plaster in Glasgow and marmorino in Glasgow suit living rooms, while limewash in Glasgow and clay plaster in Glasgow suit older walls. Feature walls in liquid metal in Glasgow sit well beside a quiet seamless bathroom. Everything is gathered under decorative specialists in Glasgow, and our lime plaster work is covered in Venetian plastering in Glasgow.

Questions about microcement in Glasgow

Can microcement go over the tiles in a Glasgow bathroom?

Usually yes, and that is half its appeal. The tiles must be firmly stuck, degreased and keyed, and any drummy ones lifted and made good. Grout lines are filled and the surface reinforced so they do not shadow through. If the tiles are loose or the floor moves, we take them up instead.

Will microcement work on a timber floor in a tenement flat?

Only once the floor has been stiffened and boarded properly. A springy floor will crack a rigid surface however good the material is. We check this at the survey and say plainly if the floor needs work first.

Is microcement waterproof in a shower?

The sealer makes the surface waterproof and washable, not the cement. The tanking behind a shower still has to be done properly, exactly as it would under tile. A seamless surface with no grout is easier to keep clean, but it does not replace waterproofing the structure.

Do you sell microcement for my own decorator in Glasgow?
