Venetian plastering training near Cambridge means a journey to the Zavoré Academy in Birmingham, where the courses are taught. Nothing runs in Cambridge itself, so decorators, plasterers and homeowners from the city and Cambridgeshire travel to Birmingham for three or four days of hands on teaching.
The courses welcome painters and decorators, plasterers and builders, designers, property developers who want to understand finishes, and people leaving other careers. If you have never held a plastering trowel, the Beginner Course is written for you.
Cambridge combines centuries of university architecture with a great deal of recent building, and both kinds of property can use skilled plaster finishes.
The older parts of the city include the colleges, Georgian and earlier houses in the centre, and Victorian terraces in districts such as the Mill Road area. Cambridge is also known for its pale gault brick. Behind brick and stone like this are solid walls that benefit from breathable plaster, which is the territory of lime based finishes and Marmorino. Owners of period houses often ask for work that respects the building.
Newer Cambridge is just as significant. The city has expanded with large housing developments and apartments, and a strong science and technology economy brings in new businesses and residents. Flat, regular walls in recent homes and offices are the right surface for polished plaster, and restaurants, hotels and bars in the city centre can use a tactile wall to stand apart from the next venue.
If you already work around Cambridge, learning Venetian plaster is a way to move into a more specialised part of the market, serving customers who want something unusual and are ready to invest in it.
If you are starting out, pick the Beginner Course. If you have the foundations, the Advanced Course goes further. If you want a plan of your own, choose 1 to 1 Training. The teaching day is 10am to 5pm.
The Beginner Course explains what Venetian plaster is and how a wall is built up layer by layer, then lets you practise preparation, base coats and a range of textures. The Advanced Course adds artificial rock, textured Marmorino, stencil work, sanding and high gloss polishing. If there is one finish you want to master, 1 to 1 Training keeps all three days on it.
Read inside the Beginner Course to see how the days unfold. Dates, if set, are on the training page, and you can register interest there.
You can reach the Academy by train or by car. Birmingham is central in England, and because the course lasts three or four days, you should plan where you will stay as part of your booking.
A partner rate is held at a hotel near the Academy. Quote Zavoré when you book to use it. For airport or station pickup, ask when you reserve your seat, and note that the price depends on where you arrive. Lunch and refreshments are provided on every course day.
Your panels come home with you, giving you a portfolio on day one. You also get a Zavoré certificate, trade pricing on Zavoré materials and a private group with a helpline for life. If you take the Advanced Course, you receive help to find, price and win a first paid decorative job.
