There is no Venetian plastering training in Hereford itself. The courses are taught at the Zavoré Academy in Birmingham, and people from Hereford and Herefordshire make the journey for 3 or 4 days. Afterwards they take the skill back to a county full of characterful buildings.
The courses are for decorators and builders working on rural and period property, plasterers wanting a decorative sideline, designers, people changing career and homeowners who like to learn by doing. No earlier experience is needed.
Herefordshire is a rural county with a cathedral city at its heart, and its buildings differ from those in big urban areas. That difference is exactly what makes lime plaster knowledge valuable here.
The county is known for its black and white timber framed houses and villages, and Hereford itself has Georgian and Victorian townhouses along with older buildings near the cathedral. Hereford Cathedral is famous for the Mappa Mundi. Farmhouses, cottages and barn conversions are common across the surrounding countryside and along the Wye valley. Old walls like these were built with lime and with materials that let moisture pass through, so a breathable plaster such as Marmorino is the sensible match.
Homeowners restoring a farmhouse or converting a barn tend to want rooms with warmth and texture, and decorative plaster delivers both. Polished plaster can suit more contemporary extensions and open plan kitchens, while a bathroom or boot room may call for tadelakt or microcement.
Inside the city, there are newer homes and apartments, along with pubs, hotels, restaurants and shops that refit regularly. A Hereford decorator who can offer Venetian plaster has something extra to bring to each of these jobs.
For beginners, the Beginner Course comes first. Advanced students and people from site can step up to the Advanced Course, while 1 to 1 Training is open to everyone. Check the training page for dates, and register interest if you cannot see one.
Each day runs from 10am to 5pm, with up to six students in a group. The Beginner Course covers the theory, preparation and base coats, a range of textures, and Marmorino, polished plaster and metallics. The Advanced Course goes into artificial rock, stencil work, acrylic polish plastering and tinting. A 1 to 1 course could suit you if you travel a long way and want every day devoted to your own priorities. There is more help in our guide to choosing a Venetian plastering course.
Birmingham is central in England, and students from Herefordshire usually come by train or by car. Because the courses last 3 or 4 days, you should decide where you will stay before you book.
Zavoré has a partner rate at a hotel near the Academy, available when you quote Zavoré. Airport or station pickup can be arranged with your booking, with a price that depends on where you arrive. Lunch and refreshments are provided each day.
Half the fee reserves your bench, and the rest is paid on the day. Call 07592 929191 or email sales@zavore.co.uk. If you book online, you pay in full.
When you head home, you take your own finished panels, a Zavoré certificate and trade pricing on materials. Samples are especially helpful in rural areas, where customers may not have seen a Venetian plaster wall in person.
The private course group and helpline last for life, which is reassuring when you are working far from the Academy. Advanced students also get help to find, price and win a first paid decorative job.
