Venetian plastering in the West Midlands

The region is dense and varied, so there is no single answer about the walls. This page explains what we usually meet, and the finishes that suit each kind of building.

The homes of the West Midlands

The West Midlands is built around Birmingham, Coventry, Wolverhampton and the Black Country towns. Each has its own housing, shaped by trades such as metalwork, the jewellery trade, locks and chains, engineering and car making.

In Birmingham you find Georgian and Victorian townhouses and villas in Edgbaston and Moseley, the converted workshops of the Jewellery Quarter, Bournville’s Arts and Crafts garden village homes, and tower blocks and canalside apartments in the centre. Across the Black Country, towns such as Dudley, Walsall and West Bromwich have long streets of Victorian and Edwardian brick terraces beside postwar estates and former industrial land that has been rebuilt with new housing. Wolverhampton adds Victorian villas in areas such as Tettenhall. Coventry, rebuilt after the Second World War, mixes surviving timber framed buildings with postwar centre and Victorian terraces. Solihull and Sutton Coldfield are mostly interwar and later suburbs, with larger detached houses.

This means three common starting points. Older solid brick walls with lime plaster want a breathable finish. Interwar and postwar semis often have mixed plaster that needs checking. New build and apartment walls are plasterboard and need reinforced joints and the right primer.

Finishes that suit the region’s buildings

• Marmorino for Victorian and Edwardian terraces and villas, where a breathable lime surface suits solid walls.
• Polished plaster for apartments and new builds, where flat walls let a deep sheen look its best.
• Concrete effect for workshop and warehouse conversions with exposed brick and large open walls.
• Limewash for cottages, hallways and bedrooms where a matt, chalky wall suits the house.

How we work across the West Midlands

Because our applicators travel from Birmingham, much of the region is within easy reach and a survey before we quote is simple to arrange. Small questions can be answered from photos, but we survey walls before pricing, looking at substrate, flatness, cracks, damp, movement, access and protection. We say plainly if a wall needs skimming, stripping or a damp problem fixed first.

Some customers prefer to use their own decorator, and we send tinted plaster, base coats and wax by tracked delivery.
