Venetian plastering training for the West Midlands is taught at the Zavoré Academy in Birmingham, so for people across the region the courses are on the doorstep rather than a long way off. Whether you live in Birmingham, the Black Country, Coventry, Solihull or further out, you attend for 3 or 4 days and then put the skill to work close to home.
The courses suit decorators and plasterers wanting a premium service, builders and developers, interior designers, career changers and homeowners. You do not need any experience to begin.
The West Midlands is a varied region, and that variety shows in its buildings. A decorator here can meet very different briefs in one week, from a Victorian terrace to a new city centre apartment.
Birmingham has the Jewellery Quarter, whose Victorian workshops and warehouses have been converted into homes, offices and bars, and Edgbaston, with its large Victorian and Georgian houses. Moseley and Kings Heath bring Victorian and Edwardian villas and terraces, and Bournville is known for the houses built around the Cadbury factory. Walls from these periods were built for lime, so a breathable finish such as Marmorino suits them well.
Beyond Birmingham, the Black Country towns of Dudley, Walsall and West Bromwich have plenty of terraces and semis, while Solihull and Sutton Coldfield are known for larger family homes. Coventry has its timber framed core and rebuilt centre, and Wolverhampton has its own mix of Victorian and interwar streets.
The region's canals, former factories and warehouses have been turned into apartments, and new developments continue to appear in city centres. Flat modern walls respond well to polished plaster, and bathrooms and wet rooms to tadelakt or microcement.
Hotels, restaurants, bars and offices add a commercial side. For a trader anywhere in the region, Venetian plaster is a way to widen the offer while staying close to home.
Pick the Beginner Course if you are new, the Advanced Course if you have done the first or work on site, and 1 to 1 Training if you want a plan of your own. Dates are published on the training page, where you can register interest too.
Every day runs 10am to 5pm, and group courses are capped at six students. The Beginner Course covers theory, preparation and base coats, textures and the main finishes. The Advanced Course covers more demanding work such as artificial rock, vein work and coloured waxes. If you want to practise a single finish, 1 to 1 Training keeps the days focused. Most students from the West Midlands come to Birmingham by train or by car. Birmingham is central in England, and many people in the region may find they can travel in each day.
Still, a course of 3 or 4 days is a full commitment, and some students prefer to stay nearby. Zavoré holds a partner rate at a hotel near the Academy, available when you quote Zavoré. Airport or station pickup can be added to a booking, for a price that depends on where you arrive.
Pay half the price to hold a bench and the remainder on the day. Call 07592 929191 or email sales@zavore.co.uk, or book online and pay in full.
After the course you have your own finished panels, a Zavoré certificate and trade pricing on Zavoré materials. Panels are a quick way to show homeowners, developers and designers across the region exactly what you can do.
A private course group and helpline stay open for life, so you can ask a question after any job. Advanced students also get help to find, price and win a first paid decorative job.
