Venetian plastering in Notting Hill

Marmorino, limewash and polished plaster, tinted to your colour in Birmingham and laid in Notting Hill homes by our own applicators.

For Venetian plastering in Notting Hill, Zavoré supplies authentic Italian lime based Venetian plaster and installs it with our own applicators, who travel from Birmingham. We lay Venetian plaster, Marmorino, limewash, tadelakt, microcement and other decorative finishes in family houses, garden flats and shops. Order a sample board to try colours at home, or email photos and the postcode to sales@zavore.co.uk.

Notting Hill is known for its colour, and a plaster finish here can be gentle or bold, but it has to suit houses that are, for the most part, Victorian.

The houses of Notting Hill

Much of the district was laid out in the nineteenth century as the Ladbroke estate, with crescents and communal garden squares such as Lansdowne Crescent, Ladbroke Square and Stanley Gardens. The big stucco villas around these gardens have tall windows and generous rooms, and a great many have been divided into flats. Around Portobello Road and Westbourne Grove the terraces are smaller, and many of them are painted in pale colours.

Mews houses sit behind the larger streets, and the roads towards Notting Hill Gate have a mix of Victorian terraces and later blocks. Ladbroke Grove and the area to its north include Edwardian and Victorian houses as well as more modern blocks, among them Trellick Tower on Golborne Road, a brutalist tower by Erno Goldfinger. Much of the area is covered by conservation areas.

That gives us three types of wall to think about. Stucco villas and terraces have old lime plaster and tall ceilings, often with original cornices. Mews houses and garden flats can be small and dark, and sometimes damp at the lower level. Modern blocks and refurbished interiors have flat, plasterboard surfaces.

Finishes for Notting Hill homes

  • Marmorino for the principal rooms of stucco villas, because a lime based finish suits the older plaster and lets the wall breathe.
  • Limewash for mews houses and the painted terraces around Portobello Road, where a soft colour with movement looks right on small walls.
  • Cornice and coving to restore ceilings in tall rooms that have lost their mouldings in past alterations.
  • Concrete effect or microcement for kitchens, bathrooms and shops, which suit a modern, tough look on a properly prepared surface.
  • Tadelakt for showers, since Venetian plaster is not what we recommend there.

How we work in Notting Hill

We plan London jobs as blocks of days, with the applicators staying on site and laying every coat in sequence. That way the plaster is built up properly and nobody has to make repeated journeys from Birmingham.

The process starts with your photos and a rough idea of the size. We then survey before pricing, looking at the substrate, flatness, cracks, damp and movement, how the room is used, and access and protection. Garden flats and lower rooms are the ones where we pay most attention to damp. Once you have approved the sample and price, we agree dates, and the plaster is tinted in Birmingham to your signed off sample. Choose from 48 house colours or any NCS reference.

Parking is restricted in much of Notting Hill, and market days around Portobello Road bring extra traffic, so please tell us about permits and access early. Further reading on bathrooms is in our Venetian plaster bathroom guide, and you can see every area we cover.

Shops, galleries and designers

The shops, cafes and galleries around Portobello Road and Westbourne Grove can be finished in a hard wearing decorative plaster. Interior designers can find help on our specification page. For decorators, we send tinted materials by tracked delivery, run courses in Birmingham and offer trade accounts.

Questions about Venetian plastering in Notting Hill

Which finish suits a stucco villa on the Ladbroke estate?

Marmorino is a good match for the old lime plaster of a stucco villa. It breathes, it has a fine surface, and it can be taken from matt to a soft sheen.

Can you plaster a mews house in Notting Hill?

Yes. Small rooms can look lovely in limewash or Marmorino. We would survey for damp and for access, since mews streets are narrow.

Do you travel to London from Birmingham for a single room?

Yes, our applicators travel from Birmingham. We plan the work in a block of days so that the coats are laid in order and the team stays on site.

Can I buy plaster for my own decorator in Notting Hill?

Yes. We tint it to your chosen colour and send it by tracked delivery, together with the base coats and other materials.
