Venetian plastering in Chelsea

Venetian plastering in Chelsea is something Zavoré can supply and install for riverside houses, red brick mansion flats and new apartments. Chelsea houses and what they need

Along the Thames, Cheyne Walk and Chelsea Embankment have some of the oldest houses in the district, with Queen Anne and Georgian brick fronts, many of them listed. Near the Royal Hospital, designed by Wren, the streets of the Chelsea conservation areas are made up of small Georgian and Victorian terraces, often painted in soft colours, with cottage like proportions.

Closer to Sloane Square and the King’s Road you meet red brick mansion blocks and the pale, Queen Anne revival terraces of the late Victorian estates, and streets such as Tite Street, known for the artists who lived there, have houses built with artists in mind. Further west, around Chelsea Harbour and Lots Road, former industrial land has become modern riverside apartments.

That variety asks for different answers. A Georgian cottage wall will not be straight and wants a soft, forgiving lime finish. A mansion flat may have thick old walls and a high ceiling. A riverside apartment has flat boards and concrete, where a polished finish can show its full depth.

Finishes we would suggest

• Limewash for small Georgian and Victorian cottages, where its gentle, cloudy movement suits low ceilings and uneven walls.
• Marmorino for drawing rooms and hallways in mansion flats and Cheyne Walk houses, giving a fine, quietly shining surface that lime walls can carry.
• Hand painted murals or gilding for a house with an artistic eye, where one wall or a ceiling can carry something unique.
• Polished plaster for riverside apartments with flat, modern walls.
• Tadelakt for bathrooms with a carefully waterproofed wall, as we do not use Venetian plaster in showers.

Running a Chelsea job

Because we travel from Birmingham to London, Chelsea work is booked as a block of days, with the same applicators on site until the last coat is on. They do not leave halfway through to return home.

First we look at photos and measurements. We then survey the walls before pricing, checking the substrate, flatness, cracks, damp and any movement, along with how the room is used and what must be protected. If a wall must be skimmed, stripped or dried out first, we say so. Dates are set after you approve the sample and the price, and your plaster is tinted in Birmingham to that sample before travelling.
