Newport is a port city with a mixed building stock, and its streets explain most of what we meet on the walls.
Newport grew with its docks and its trade on the River Usk, and its best known landmark is the Transporter Bridge. The Victorian expansion is still the backbone of the city. Maindee and the streets towards the centre have long runs of brick terraces, while Pillgwenlly, close to the old docks, has dense Victorian terraces.
Stow Hill, rising to St Woolos Cathedral, has larger Victorian villas and town houses, and Belle Vue Park, a Victorian public park, is surrounded by handsome houses of the same period. Parts of the city centre are a conservation area.
Caerleon, on the edge of the city, is a historic village built beside the remains of a Roman legionary fortress, and has older stone and rendered cottages beside Victorian and later homes. Out in the suburbs and on the outskirts the housing is mainly interwar, postwar and modern, with large estates and newer developments built with plasterboard walls. The city centre has also seen new apartments and shops.
Victorian brick terraces and modern estate houses want different treatment, so the survey comes before the colour.
Photos, rough measurements and a postcode are enough to begin. If the job is more than a single wall, we visit to survey, checking the substrate, flatness, cracks, damp, movement and how the room is used, as well as access and floor protection. If a wall needs skimming, stripping or a damp repair first, we say so plainly.
You approve the sample and the price and then we agree dates. Your plaster is tinted to the colour on the sample in Birmingham before it leaves. Because Newport is further from our base, we plan the work in blocks of days so the team can lay each coat in order without constant travel.
Warm, aired rooms help each coat dry, and cold or damp rooms slow it down. Our installation page explains the stages.
