Cowbridge is small, old and well kept, and a lime based finish suits much of what stands here.
Cowbridge began as a medieval market town and still has a surviving gate and stretches of its town wall. Its long, wide High Street is lined with Georgian and Victorian frontages, inns, shops and town houses, many of them in a conservation area, with some listed buildings among them. Side streets such as Church Street and the lanes behind the High Street have smaller cottages, many of them rendered and painted in soft colours.
Close to the town, Llanblethian is a village of older cottages climbing a hill, and the surrounding Vale has stone farmhouses, barns and village houses built of the local limestone. Many are rendered, limewashed or painted, and many have been extended and modernised over the years.
On the edges of Cowbridge are newer estates and recent family houses, with plasterboard walls and modern layouts.
Old limestone walls are thick and take in moisture. A lime based plaster lets them dry, where a sealed coating can trap damp behind it.
We start with photos, rough measurements and your postcode. If a house is old or protected, tell us what you know about its history. For anything bigger than a feature wall we survey, checking the substrate, flatness, cracks, damp, movement, access and protection of floors and joinery. If a wall needs skimming, stripping or a damp problem solved, we say so before any finish is priced.
After you approve a sample and the price, we agree dates. The plaster is tinted to the colour on the sample in Birmingham before it leaves. Cowbridge is further from our base, so the work is planned in blocks of days and the applicators remain on the job, laying each coat in order.
The High Street has limited parking and loading, and country lanes can be narrow, so let us know what delivery vehicles can reach. Cold and damp rooms slow drying, so heat helps. The installation page describes each stage.
Designers working on country or village properties can find notes on our specifier page. A builder or decorator in the Vale can buy tinted plaster from us by tracked delivery, and our courses in Birmingham teach the craft. Our article on lime and acrylic plaster matters for old walls, and every area we cover is listed together.
