Venetian plastering in Maidstone

Lime Venetian plaster, Marmorino, limewash and microcement for Maidstone homes and conversions, tinted in Birmingham and laid by our own applicators.

Zavoré takes on Venetian plastering in Maidstone and the surrounding villages, for homes, barn and oast conversions, offices and hospitality spaces. Our Birmingham base supplies authentic Italian lime based Venetian plaster, Marmorino, limewash, microcement, tadelakt and other decorative finishes, and our own applicators travel to install them. Order a sample board to try colours, or email photos of the space to sales@zavore.co.uk.

Because Maidstone is well beyond a day trip from Birmingham, installations here are planned as a block of days, so the team can stay put and build up the plaster one coat at a time.

Ragstone, brick and oast houses, the homes of Maidstone

Maidstone is the county town of Kent and sits on the River Medway. Its oldest buildings, such as All Saints Church and the Archbishop’s Palace beside the river, are built of Kentish ragstone, the grey local stone quarried around the town for centuries. You will see ragstone in garden walls and older houses across the area.

As the town grew in the nineteenth century, streets of Victorian brick terraces spread out from the centre, with larger villas on the rising ground. The twentieth century added interwar and postwar suburbs, and new housing estates continue to grow around the edges of the town.

Out in the villages, places such as Bearsted, Loose and Boughton Monchelsea have older cottages, weatherboarded houses and, in true Kent fashion, oast houses and barns converted into homes. Conversions often combine thick old walls with new timber and plasterboard inside, which is exactly where the choice of finish needs some thought.

Finishes that suit Maidstone homes

  • Marmorino for stone and solid brick walls, since lime lets an old wall release moisture instead of trapping it behind a film.
  • Limewash for the curved rooms of an oast conversion or a cottage bedroom, with a soft, uneven depth of colour.
  • Venetian plaster for living rooms and dining rooms in newer homes, where flat plasterboard can take a smooth, polished finish once it is properly prepared.
  • Concrete effect or microcement for barn conversions with an industrial feel, and for seamless bathrooms on a waterproofed wall.

Our article on preparing walls for Venetian plaster explains what happens before the first coat goes on.

How a Venetian plastering job in Maidstone runs

Photos, rough measurements and a postcode are all we need at first, and we can often deal with small queries straight from the pictures. A proper survey comes before any installation price. We look at what the wall is made of, its flatness, any cracking, damp or movement, how the room will be used, and the access and protection we will need. If the wall needs skimming, stripping or a damp problem dealing with before we can plaster it, we will tell you so.

Once the sample and price are agreed, we book the dates. The plaster is tinted in Birmingham to match your approved sample. For conversions in particular, new plaster and screeds must be thoroughly dry before we start, and cold, damp rooms slow the drying of each coat, so some background heat helps. You can see all our finishes on the installation page.

Questions about Venetian plastering in Maidstone

Do you install Venetian plaster in Maidstone and the nearby villages?

Yes. Our applicators travel from Birmingham and stay on site for a block of days, after a survey and once you have signed off your sample and price.

What finish suits an oast house conversion?

Original masonry walls are best with a breathable lime finish such as limewash or Marmorino. New plasterboard partitions inside the conversion need reinforced joints and the right primer before any finish.

Can Venetian plaster go on a ragstone wall?

Not onto bare stone. A polished finish needs a flat wall, so an uneven stone wall would need preparing first, and we would explain exactly what at the survey, along with any damp to deal with.

Do you plaster new build homes around Maidstone?

Yes. Flat new walls suit polished Venetian plaster well, once the board joints are reinforced and the correct primer is on.
