Canterbury is a long way from Birmingham, so we book the job as a block of days. Our applicators stay in the area for the duration and lay every coat in the right order.
Few places in England carry their history as openly as Canterbury. The cathedral, St Augustine’s Abbey and St Martin’s Church together form a World Heritage Site, and much of the old city is still wrapped in its medieval walls. Inside them are timber framed houses with jettied upper floors leaning over the lanes, weavers’ houses beside the River Stour, and Georgian fronts added to far older buildings. Many are listed, and almost all of the centre lies within a conservation area.
Parts of the city centre were destroyed in bombing during the Second World War and rebuilt afterwards, so postwar buildings stand close to medieval ones. Outside the walls, roads such as those around St Dunstan’s and Wincheap have Georgian and Victorian terraces in brick, while flint appears in older walls across the city.
With two universities, Canterbury also has a great many student houses and newer apartment blocks, and the edges of the city have new housing estates. For the plaster, the main point is clear. Timber frames, lath and old lime need finishes that move and breathe with them, while modern walls offer the flatness a high polish needs.

Start by sending photos, approximate measurements and your postcode to sales@zavore.co.uk, and we will answer the simpler questions from those. Before pricing, we survey the walls to understand the substrate, flatness, cracks, damp and any movement in the frame, as well as how each room is used and how we can work with good access and protection. Where an old wall needs repairs, stripping or a damp issue resolving before any decorative finish, we explain that honestly.
When your sample and the price are approved, we arrange the dates. Everything is tinted in Birmingham to the colour on your sample. Inside the city walls, parking and vehicle access are restricted, so please tell us about permits or loading arrangements early. Limewash, clay plaster or Marmorino, because they are breathable and suit the slight movement of an old frame. A polished finish needs flat walls, which old houses rarely have.
