Breathable lime finishes for the old walls of Lewes, tinted to your sample in Birmingham and laid by our own applicators over a planned run of days.
Zavoré offers Venetian plastering in Lewes for period houses, cottages, flats and shops. We supply and install authentic Italian lime based Venetian plaster, Marmorino, limewash and other decorative finishes, and our own applicators travel down from our Birmingham base to lay them. To begin, send a few photos of the rooms with rough measurements and your postcode, or order a sample board so you can live with a colour before deciding.
Because Lewes is a long way from Birmingham, we book the work as a run of consecutive days. The applicators stay with your job from the first base coat to the final polish, which keeps every layer going on in the right order.
Lewes is the county town of East Sussex and sits inside the South Downs National Park, on the slopes above the River Ouse. Much of the old town falls within a conservation area, with a great many listed buildings along the High Street and the narrow lanes, known locally as twittens, that drop away from it.
What makes Lewes interesting to a plasterer is what lies behind the frontages. Many of the neat Georgian fronts on the High Street were added to much older timber framed houses, and some are clad in black glazed mathematical tiles made to look like brick. Below the castle, in Southover and down in Cliffe, you find flint walls, brick dressings and cottages that have been patched and altered for centuries.
Walls like these move a little with the seasons and need to release moisture, and they are rarely straight. Further out there are Victorian and Edwardian terraces near the station and later houses on the edges of town, which are usually simpler surfaces to work on. Whichever you have, the survey tells us what the wall is made of before we suggest anything.
If your house is listed, check with the local planning authority before changing historic plaster, and tell us early so the finish and the preparation can be chosen with that in mind.
Photos and measurements come first, and simple questions can often be settled from them. For anything more involved we survey in person, looking at the substrate, flatness, cracks, damp, signs of movement, how the room is used, access and what needs protecting. Old walls sometimes need lime repairs, stripping of modern paint or a damp issue solved before any decorative coat, and we say so plainly.
When you have signed off a sample and the price, we fix the dates. The plaster is tinted to your approved sample in Birmingham before it travels, so the colour on your walls matches the board you chose. Lime finishes dry slowly in cold, damp rooms, so gentle background heat helps, as does having electrics and joinery finished before we arrive.
The streets in the old centre are narrow and steep, with little room to park or unload, so let us know about access, parking and any neighbours who share an entrance. Our Venetian plaster installation page explains the wider service, and all installations lists every finish we lay.
Designers and architects working on Lewes houses can find specification support on our page for designers and architects. Builders who prefer to lay the finish with their own trades can buy materials from us, tinted and sent by tracked delivery, and plasterers who want to learn the craft can join one of our courses in Birmingham.

Yes. Our applicators travel from Birmingham and stay on the job for a planned run of days, so each coat is laid in sequence without long gaps.
A breathable lime finish such as limewash or Marmorino is the usual choice for these walls. Acrylic look alikes form a film that can hold moisture in an old wall.
Often, yes, but consent may be needed before historic plaster is altered. Speak to the planning authority first, and we will plan a lime based finish that respects the building.
Choose from our 48 house colours or give us any NCS reference. We tint a sample to that colour, and once you approve it the full batch is tinted to match.
