Leicestershire is a county of one large city, many market towns and a great many villages, and every job begins with a survey of the walls.
Leicester grew on hosiery, knitwear and footwear, and its Victorian expansion left huge numbers of red brick terraces, many of them in areas such as Clarendon Park and the streets around the university. To the south east, Stoneygate and Knighton have grand Victorian and Edwardian villas with high ceilings and ornate plasterwork, while New Walk, the Georgian promenade into the centre, is lined with elegant period houses. Old factories in and around the city centre have been converted into apartments.
Loughborough, home to a large university and a historic bell foundry, has its own mix of Victorian terraces, student houses and newer estates. Market Harborough and Ashby de la Zouch keep handsome Georgian fronts along their main streets, with older buildings behind. In Charnwood Forest the villages use the local granite, and many roofs are of grey Swithland slate, while in the east of the county around Melton Mowbray older houses are often built of warm brown ironstone.
Around every town there are interwar semis, postwar estates and a steady supply of new build homes with plasterboard walls. That makes Leicestershire a county of very different backgrounds for a decorative finish, and the right choice changes from one village to the next.
Email us photos and rough measurements and we will tell you what looks feasible. Before quoting an installation we come out and survey the walls, recording the substrate, how flat they are, any cracking, damp or movement, how each room is used, and what the access and protection will involve. Where skimming, stripping or a damp repair needs to come first, we will say so in plain terms.
When you approve a sample and the price, we agree the dates with you and tint the plaster to that sample in Birmingham. For bigger jobs, or for homes further across the county, we plan the work in blocks of days so the team can stay on the job and lay each coat in its proper order.

Polished Venetian plaster looks very fine in large reception rooms once the walls are flat, and lime Marmorino is a good choice where the old walls need to breathe. We often pair either with restored cornice.
Yes. Stone walls should stay breathable, so we would suggest limewash, clay plaster or Marmorino after checking for damp at the survey.
